It might sound like an easy process, but brushing your hair the right way is very important. We usually comb to prevent our hair from tangling and to give it a style, but do you know that this regular practice actually decides the health and texture of your hair? Brushing in the wrong way can lead to breakage, split ends, hair fall, and many other problems.

Before combing, it’s very important to divide your hair into sections and then comb gently, rather than randomly running the comb through your tresses.

Here are some basic rules that everyone should follow – no matter what your current hair routine is!

• Choose Your Brush Wisely:

If your hair is prone to more tangles, then a brush with dense bristles is definitely not your friend. Instead, a paddle brush is the best option for any hair type. Although it detangles a little, it still will be gentle on your hair as the bristles are not too dense and not too way apart from each other.

• Don’t Comb Wet Hair:

Well, this one is a serious warning: never comb your hair when it is wet! Since dampness weakens the hair shaft, it leads to more breakage.

However, if you’re in a rush, use a wide tooth comb and slick back your strands to a loose and low ponytail.

• Start Combing From The Bottom:

It may make you feel unnatural at first, but the mantra to brush your hair the right way is to make your way up. Always start brushing from the bottom as it allows you to tackle the tangles along the shaft rather than pulling the follicles out of its root.

• Give Your Scalp Some TLC:

Healthy hair begins at the scalp (as we all know!). That’s why you need to pay special attention to your roots while brushing. The aim is to drag the natural oils from your roots till the shaft, which will help in strengthening the hair.

Do you follow the right tools and techniques? Let’s check out the right way of brushing as per your hair type:

1. For Fine Hair:

Brushing is the major cause of breakage when it comes to fine hair. Fine hair has less protein as compared to thick hair, and so every time you yank your brush through your strands, it will cause more damage than it does to hair of any other type.

You may pick a synthetic bristled brush to gently comb your fine strands (such a brush can easily glide through your hair). Always prefer using a detangling spray before brushing.

2. For Thick Hair:

Thick hair is considered to be more durable, but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to experience any breakage or split ends. Make a cocktail of a leave-in-conditioner and light oil – apply it over your hair and then brush it using a paddle bristle brush.

3. For Curly / Coarse Hair:

After washing your hair, apply some leave-in conditioner, and using your fingers or a wide toothed comb, brush through your strands. Once you’re out of the shower, gently towel-dry and avoid brushing. Let your curls air dry naturally!

4. For Damaged Hair:

If you feel that your hair is damaged or color treated, a moisturizing cream or a light dose of heavy conditioner should be applied to brush out easily. Damaged hair is more susceptible to breakage. Be gentle while brushing. Otherwise it can cause split ends due to friction.

5. For Coiled / Kinky Hair:

For those with kinky textured hair, brushing can be a really painful task. And if you skip brushing your hair, it may lead to dreadlocks! This hair type tends to be a bit dryer – so pair this with either a leave-in conditioner or any styling oil for healthy and moisturized hair. Select a pick comb to speed up the process.

Although brushing your hair is very natural, it’s not as simple as you believe. Keep the above tips in mind the next time you grab the handle!
