How To Do Burn Makeup?

7:35 AM

Do you want to replicate the Freddy Krueger look this Halloween? Do you want to give your friends a scare with a really realistic burn makeup? Well, you may be thinking it requires professional prosthetic makeup experience to create this look, but with a bit of patience and creativity, you can do it yourself.

Would you like to know how? Read on!

What You Need:

To start with, collect all the supplies you need and prepare your face for the makeup. You will need gelatin, a strong hair gel, silk muslin, bobby pins, medical adhesive, tongue depressor, cream based makeup color, KY jelly, bristle brushes and orange stipple sponge.

Now start preparing the silk. Cut 1 cm x 3 cm strips of the silk, roughly four or five, in a horizontal manner. This is important because the fabric direction should be same for all the strips. Take the brushes and cut the bristles by a third. Ram the bristles down on a hard surface to mess them up – this helps in the random application of the paint. To enhance this messing up, use a wire brush and comb the outer bristles back until the bristles form a round, wispy mass.

1. Create The Base:

The structure of your face would lose some definition if it faced serious burns. To replicate this, take the strips of silk and start attaching them to your face while pulling the features taut. For example, take a strip of silk and glue it to the back of your earlobe, near the bottom tip. Now pull the strip of silk as far as you can and glue the other end to your cheek. You will see how your earlobe is twisted and almost melted into the skin of your cheek. Similarly, glue the silk strips on the edge of your eye, lips, and nostrils – everywhere pulling and stretching to give the look of melted skin. Although many artists suggest paper towels for replicating burnt skin, silk really is the best option because it does not stretch and holds the tautness. Prepare your hair by applying hair gel near your hairline and laying it flat against your scalp.

2. Use Gelatin:

To prepare the gelatin, melt the gelatin first. This will be really hot, so mix some water. Once the water is added, it cools down a bit and separates, so you need to reheat the mixture to give a uniform viscosity. Again, allow it to cool before you apply it to your face. Otherwise you may end up with a real burn. Test it on your hand to see if the gelatin is cool enough (but too cool means it has set and needs to be reheated).

With the diffuse brushes, dab the gelatin onto the side of your face over the edges of the hairline. As gelatin cools, it creates different textures – stringy, lumpy, membrane-like, etc. Play with it. Try to sculpt hard edges and troughs and some flat areas with the gelatin to create a realistic texture.

3. Fill The Color:

Start with a light pink and cover the whole area, so that it looks like inflamed skin. Use the sponge to dab on the colors instead of brushing. Take some darker pink and reds and dab them on in places. You can airbrush newer layers of color if you have access to the tools. This will help maintain previous layers of color. Using KY jelly emulate a gruesome, fresh burn.

4. Finish With Charcoal:

Finally, brush some charcoal powder in the surrounding area to give it a bit of edge and dimension. You can use an old toothbrush to create random strokes. It adds to the authenticity of the look.

Do not sulk in a corner if you have been a victim of burns. With these simple tips, even you can march on the roads with elan and confidence!
