5 Simple Ways To Stay Fit During Ramadan

8:22 AM

Most of us are under the impression that fasting is a great way to lose weight and detoxify. But this is only one half of the truth, and the other half is that your diet has to be accompanied by a great exercise regime.

It is the holy period of Ramadan, you need a little help to stay fit because…ahem…did you forget about all the fried stuff and loads of meaty protein that you will relish during Iftar every day? We understand the guilt associated with all that yummy treats, and so we have rounded up a few simple tips that will help you stay in shape during your fasting stint [and your binge eating!]

1. Get Physical!

Get Physical

Yeah, you heard us right! We know you fast all day, but the early morning meal, Suhoor, hands you a big bowl of energy. So tap into it and get that cardio session going. If exercising in the morning is not your cup of tea, then get into your sneakers late in the evening after Iftaar when your tummy is full and your spirits are high! Still not convinced? Then try some yoga and meditation – that should help. However, stay away from intense workouts because they will make you hungry again and your body would not be able to endure it.

2. Watch What You Eat:

What You Eat

Yeah, we know how difficult it is to stay hungry the entire day considering there are delicacies being prepared all day for Iftaar. Aaah….that aroma kills! But that really does not mean that you pounce on food like a grizzly bear in the evening. Keep fried stuff to a minimum and go for low-fat preparations. Use olive oil instead of ghee, and make at least two types of salads that you can eat before you touch the “real food”.

By the way, try and limit your consumption of red meat because it is loaded with calories and fats. Include a lot of whole grains in your food that will make up for high roughage content and actually help you lose some pounds!

3. Water Is Still Your Best Friend:

Water Is Still Your Best Friend

Hydrating your body is important, especially when you fast for a long period. We absolutely recommend drinking a large amount of water during the non-fasting time every day. Keep a target of drinking at least one liter of water every day. This will not only keep your metabolism running, but also prevent your skin looking dry when Ramadan is over. Come on girls….you gotta look your best on Eid! If this does not motivate you, then remember that water also fills your stomach – so the hunger pangs disappear almost instantly and you eat less of all that fried food!

4. Make Your Portions Small:

Make Your Portions Small

Making your portions small will prevent you from pouncing on food after a day of fasting. There is a trick that may help you in making your portions small. Instead of eating out of a big plate, take a small plate and serve your food on it. Now, since the plate is small, the portion will reduce considerably, and this little tip tricks your mind into thinking that you have eaten an entire plate of food. If this one does not work because you are okay getting up ten times and filling your “small” plate, then go back and refer to the “Watch what you eat” pointer.

5. Eat Please, But Eat Healthy:

Eat Please

Don’t give those looks, please. I never said no to eating; I only said eat healthy. And in this section, I mean – “do not miss the early morning meal – Suhoor”. After the entire night, your body is low on energy and needs to refuel. This is why breakfast is necessary. Regular replenishment with food is essential for a healthy metabolism. Besides, you do not want to go dizzy or have sudden blackouts during the day, do you?
