6 Forgotten Areas Of Your Body You Never Knew Needed SPF

8:22 AM

If you are NOT using a sunscreen already, you are sinning! The onset of global warming and all the wrath of the sun call for immediate use of SPF. And if only it was as easy as “squirting-slathering-and off you go”, the use of sunscreen has much more to it than that.

First, you need to pick the right SPF value. For those of you who have always wondered what SPF really is, it is a measure of time taken for sunburn if you were not wearing a sunscreen as opposed to the time taken for sunburn with sunscreen on. There are many sunscreen lotions available in the market today, but research says that none will give you 100 percent protection. SPF 15 gives you about 94 percent protection from the Ultra Violet B rays, and SPF 30 gives you about 97 percent protection. As you go higher, SPF 45 gives you only 98 percent protection, so SPF 30 is the most recommended.

Now that you’ve got that in place, let’s get the basics of using sunscreen right. You must already know about the buffer time a sunscreen needs before you expose yourself to the sun. Here’s a little bit of advice – it is most recommended to use a water resistant sunscreen and apply it almost an hour and a half before you hit the road. And it is not just one of those things you can apply and forget about, you need to reapply every few hours and definitely after a swim or a workout.

Just so you are as UV proof as you can get, don’t forget to show some SPF love to these 6 places, which you could very easily take for granted.

1. Ears:

They are probably the most ignored parts of your face; I bet you never put a face pack on your ears! Next time you are at your sunscreen regime, don’t forget to apply some on the front and back of your ears.

2. Nape:

Do we even know we have a nape? Come summer time, and more often than not our hair is always tied up into a pony-tail or a bun, and even if we let those tresses loose, it isn’t enough to protect our humble nape from those nasty rays. Make sure to kiss your nape with some SPF the next time you are at it!

3. Feet And Soles:

The cool summers bring out the fun flip-flops and sandals, but little did you know that they are not so much fun for your feet! Our feet are left completely exposed to the sun, and they are probably the most damaged. Don’t forget to moisturize and apply a generous layer of sunscreen on your feet and soles.

4. Lips:

If you thought it was only the winters, well, even the soaring heat leaves your lips bruised and chapped. Using a lotion on your lips must remind you of those white-lipped cricketers on the field (at least they have their lips protected!). But worry not, an array of SPF lip balms is now available! Make sure you get one for your lips ASAP.

5. Eyelids:

A good pair of sunglasses is not a solution enough to protect those glistening eyes from the sun. Your eyelids are delicate and need as much, or may be more protection than the rest of your skin. In case the extra grease or the burning sensation is your excuse for not using sunscreen on your eyelids, a whole new range of products are now available that will solve all your problems! Look up and be rest assured; it’s great investment!

6. Nails:

Wondering why your nails turn yellow in the sun? Well, it’s the UV rays that are to be blamed. Yes! You heard it. And no fancy products for this one, as a good sunscreen is all you need to protect your nails from not just turning yellow, but also the enemy- the UV rays!

And now, you are all set to go out and embrace the sun! Aren’t you?
