Summers are fun! The first few things that come to your mind are picnics, ice creams, the beach, and the holidays!!! But the gnarly side of summer brings intense heat and extreme humidity that makes it impossibly uncomfortable. And if you don’t have an AC, it could make things worse. But thinking back, most of our grandparents didn’t. If they could live through it, so can we.

Here are a few DIY ideas that are sure to help you beat the heat. Read on!

1. Get Cool With Cotton:

The satins and silks are for the cooler nights, when things get Hot!-Hot!-Hot! It is best to opt for light-colored and lightweight bed linen made of pure cotton. They are extremely breathable and promote ventilation and airflow in the room.

2. Frozen Sheets:

You heard that! Sticking your sheets into the fridge or freezer for a little while before you hit the sack is a good idea. It might not keep you cool all night, but will definitely reprieve you of the heat and humidity while you are falling asleep. It’s worth the try. Just a little piece of advice, though – make sure you wrap the sheets in plastic, or else the smell from the food will keep you up all night.

3. Loosen It Up:

Beat the heat with loose cotton jammies or a nice cool shirt. Wearing cotton underclothes also helps a lot. There is always a debate on whether sleeping naked works. While some are very comfortable with that, others say that wearing something breathable always helps soak up that sweat. So, I would say this one’s a personal preference.

4. Age-Old Tricks:

Age-Old Tricks

This trick’s an age-old one, when air conditioners were never heard of. For all you know, air conditioners are probably inspired by this idea. All you need is a fan and some ice. Use a flat-bottomed pan and place it in front of the fan. Now put the ice in the pan, and turn on the fan. The breeze is sure to carry the cold water from the surface of the ice, as it melts. This creates a nice cool mist. This one is probably the most favorite tip!

5. Cross Ventilate:

Placing the fan right across the window is another cool (pun intended) idea. The wind from outside meets the fan’s airstream, and creates a refreshing cross breeze. You could use multiple fans across many windows to amplify the affect. Pretty cool, eh?

6. Cooling Those Pulses:

This is an amazing way to cool down naturally. Use some ice or a nice cold compress on the pulse points, the wrists, elbows, neck, ankles, or groin or behind the knees. You will feel a pleasant cool rush almost instantly.

7. Turn Off The Lights:

Light bulbs give off heat. Yes, even your new best friends, the CFLs. Of course, the longer the summer days, the longer you would keep the lights off – but when you have to switch them on, try getting done with them faster. Use dim lights. They always help reduce the intensity of heat.

8. Sheer Curtains:

This trick is super interesting. And let me add, it really does work! All you need to do is wet a bed sheet and tie it up on your curtain rods. Obviously you will need to keep your windows open. But the warm breeze will help evaporate the cool water from the sheet, and as it blows inside, it will bring down the surrounding temperature.

9. Unplug At Night.

Disconnect!! Yeah! Don’t just turn off, but disconnect. Because even when gadgets are off, they tend to give off heat. Save energy and plug out!

10. The Zen Way To Cool:

When the wrath of the summer is at its peak, and those otherwise upper comfy mattresses start to spell a curse, opt for a simple straw or bamboo mat. Though you might feel that mats might be uncomfortable, when the heat is on, they retain almost no torridness unlike the plush mattresses.

Well, you should try most of these or all of these when the intensity of the summer is on the rise, and you do not have an air conditioner to your rescue. But the one sure shot way to keep you cool is to keep your head calm and cool. Nothing beats that!
