10 Fun Facts About Your Eyeliner That We Bet You Didn’t Know Before
12:49 AMFun trivia is always welcome. Getting an insight into your favorite beauty product can be quite interesting, especially if it is something as humble as the eyeliner. Now you might expect tips and tricks on using the product or some makeup hacks, but quite contrary to that, here are some facts that are sure to blow you away. Take a look at the 10 things that you may not already know about the eyeliner:
1. Do It Like An Egyptian:
Eyeliner could have potentially been the first ever makeup product invented! There are records of its usage way back in 10,000 BC by the uber fashion-forward Egyptians and Mesopotamians. That sounds mystically majestic, doesn’t it??
2. A Uni-Sex Cosmetic:
The liner fetish doesn’t end with the women. It seems that the men also drew thick, heavy lines in black around their eyes, making them almost almond shaped, thus enhancing their looks. If the movies don’t lie, those tall, macho men with eyeliner sure look quite hot!
3. A Sunscreen?
Sunscreens could be a thing of the past as well. According to popular belief, people in the ancient times wore eyeliner not only to ward off evil spirits, but also to protect themselves from the raging sun.
4. Of Toxins:
Human beings always learn the hard way! Eyeliner in the olden times was supposedly made out of lead, copper and antimony. Lead and antimony can be pretty toxic (looks like the people in those times were made of harder stuff). Thanks to some makeup godmother who worked on making the eyeliner out of safer things.
5. Russian Lineage:
Talking about makeup godmothers, there was a troupe of Russian ballet dancers that performed in London in the early 1900s. They wore defined and dramatic eye makeup, and this was what became Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden’s inspiration – to create the magical eyeliner along with a whole lot of other makeup products for the eyes, for the masses. God bless the Russian troupe.
6. Revolutionaries:
And God bless Helena Rubenstein too, who not just introduced eye makeup for the masses, but also revolutionized it. It is said that she made eyeliner that seemed bolder and more dramatic on the big screen.
7. Boundless Creativity:
If you thought eyeliner was only for the eyes, you are quite mistaken. The creative womenfolk of the World War II era drew a black line on the back of their legs to fake a stocking seam. Of course, it is the unfortunate shortage of silk and other necessities that led to this. But hats off to their creativity.
8. 5 Kinds:
For those of you who think that eyeliner is just eyeliner, you are quite mistaken. There are five forms of the brilliant, beloved eyeliner. The liquid, which most of us use. The powder based pencil (hadn’t heard of this one before). Wax-based pencils, those that don’t smudge. Gel, sheer brilliance. And Kohl, the Indian favorite (my favorite too!!).
9. History Of The Cat Eye:
This one’s not going to come as a surprise. With the likes of Twiggy and Hema Malini graciously sporting the cat eye, it is not hard to guess that the liquid liner was invented in the 1960s. Yay to that! And Kudos to them!
10. A Cool Trick:
If you have found yourself with a less effective eyeliner pencil, do not fret! All you need to do is run it over an open flame, and it will be ready to glide through. If you want that perfectly dramatic look, even though your eyeliner works well, you could quickly heat it up to make it easier to apply.
Feel smarter already? You should!
