Though we constantly engage our heads, eyes and hands to perform a major part of our work, the neck takes a toll anyway. At the end of a tiring day, it is easing a knot in the neck that truly relieves the tension.

Neck pain can result from,

  • Overworking
  • Poor seating posture
  • Muscle strain
  • Sprains from bad sleeping postures

As stress is a constant presence in our lives, the soreness can prolong for days. Since medications are a far-fetched option when you can have an easier solution, let us get started with reflexology.

Untangling Reflexology For Neck Pain:

Reflexology can be performed by a professional if you choose so, or you can perform it by yourself. This ease is what makes this alternative method manage your pain better than the others methods.

  1. According to the principles of Reflexology, we have energy points located on our hands, feet, face, shoulders and neck.
  2. Also called reflex points, these focal points are spread out like a map.
  3. Each point is connected to an organ within the body, corresponding to the function of that organ.
  4. Application of pressure to a specified point stimulates the corresponding organ, bringing balance.
  5. For the neck, the reflex points are located behind the neck, on the shoulders, on the hands and feet.
  6. Massaging these points would offer immediate relief, but with regular reflexology, neck pain begins to reduce completely (1).

So, whenever you feel that knot in the neck worrying you again, there would be no need for fancy doctors or spa appointments. All you require is a comfortable chair.

Kiss neck pain goodbye (no pun intended) with these easy techniques. You can have a loved one perform the massages for you, because they always seem to work so well.

Reflex Point 1 (Neck):

  1. Ensure you’re seated comfortably, keeping the neck straight.
  2. The point is located behind and at the base of the neck.
  3. Find the two points on either side of the spine, around the area where it enters the skull.
  4. Using both thumbs, apply pressure on these points.
  5. Massage lightly for a few seconds to ease any bruising or pain.
  6. Continue to apply pressure for 10 minutes.

This reflex point can relieve neck pain and stiffness when stimulated.

Reflex Point 2 (Shoulder):

  1. You can find the second reflex point right on the shoulder.
  2. It is located midway between the edge of the shoulder and the curve of the neck.
  3. Massaging the shoulder gives a lot of relaxation.
  4. Apply pressure to this point for about 10-15 minutes.

Stimulation of the shoulder well relieves both the shoulder and neck pains, besides easing stiffness in the respective areas.

Reflex Point 3 (Head):

  1. Another effective reflex point that can ease your discomfort is situated on your skull, behind the ear.
  2. Find the point in the depression between your ear and neck.
  3. Once you press on this reflex point, you would feel a lightened burden on your head from eased headache.
  4. Continue to apply pressure to the reflex point for a few minutes, combined with a light massage.

This point relieves neck pain as well as headache.

Reflex Point 4 (Hand):

  1. On the hand, the spinal reflex point is located from the tip of the thumb to the base of the hand (2), (3).
  2. The area spanning the outer edge of the thumb corresponds to each part of the spine.
  3. Importantly, the cervical spine energy point is found close to the first joint of the thumb, nearest to the thumbnail.
  4. To stimulate this point, thumb walking is usually performed.
  5. Here, the thumb’s tip of one hand is used to apply pressure on the reflex point in a slightly backward pulling motion.
  6. The thumb is then placed slightly forward to repeat the motion.
  7. In a similar fashion, the entire spinal area is covered.

This reflex point works well in relieving neck pain.

Reflex point 5 (Foot):

  1. Similar to the hand, the outer edge of the foot from below the big toe corresponds to the spine.
  2. Use the thumb walking technique, especially at the base of the toe to ease neck pain.
