Causes Of Root Canal:
A root canal is a canal at the centre of the tooth. It has to be treated by the dentist in order to avoid extracting the tooth (1). There are many causes of this problem, the most common one being the fracturing of the tooth caused by eating hard foods. Tooth decay that is caused when a metal filling starts shrinking, or the decay of the pulp chamber that damages the tooth also leads to a root canal.
The main problem that accompanies a root canal is the swelling of the tooth (2). This may also cause the jaw area to redden. But the most common problem is the excruciating pain and sensitivity that comes when drinking/eating things too hot or too cold.
Now that you know how root canal is caused, go ahead and read about the home remedies that can help you deal with the pain caused by it.
1. An Ice Pack:
This method has been used for many years and has been very effective. Just place an ice pack on the affected area and let it numb the area thereby reducing the pain (3). Make sure you don’t keep the ice pack for more than 10 minutes at a stretch.
2. A Liquid Diet:
When you experience tooth pain, it is advisable to stick to liquid meals. Increasing your intake of juices – like orange juice, carrot juice – is also a good idea. However, ensure the juices are not too cold as it may lead to sensitivity.
3. Common Salt:
Mix a tablespoon of salt with warm water and gargle at least two to three times a day. If possible, try and hold the water next to the affected area as long as possible before spitting it out.
4. Alcohol:
Gargling with alcoholic drinks like whisky or beer also works. It is as effective as any mouthwash. Not only will it get rid of the bacteria that cause infection, it also will numb the area, providing temporary relief from the pain.
5. Tea Tree Oil:
Tea tree oil has proved to be effective in dealing with a lot of problems including acne and scarring. The oil helps heal the pain due to root canal as well. Add a few drops of the oil to lukewarm water and keep it in your mouth for a while. This will reduce the pain.
6. Cucumber:
Another home ingredient that has pain-reducing properties is the cucumber. Cut a piece of fresh cucumber and place it on the affected tooth. The cooling effect of the cucumber helps to relieve pain.
7. Olive Oil:
Dip a cotton ball into some olive oil and apply this gently to the aching tooth. Its gentle effects rid you of the pain that you are facing. Olive oil is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the pain and swelling.
8. Clove Oil:
Cloves are known to possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anesthetic properties (4). Apply clove oil on the affected tooth for pain relief.
9. Onion/Garlic Juice:
Garlic has antibiotic and other medicinal properties, while onion is considered an antiseptic. Chewing onion/garlic was found to be more effective in treating root canal pain. But for those who don’t like this, remove the juice by squeezing the onion/garlic into a glass and drink it like any other medicine.
10. Asafetida:
This is another well-known remedy for root canal pain. Try adding a little asafetida to 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Heat the mixture a little and then, with the help of a cotton ball, apply it to the affected area to alleviate the pain.
These home remedies are usually preferred over other medication as they are easy to get hold of and are economically more viable. Of course, some of the best methods to prevent getting a root canal is limiting your intake of sweets, ensuring you floss whenever necessary, and always rinsing your mouth after meals.
