7:30 AM

Pain and numbness in your wrist and fingers can slow you down, because we need our precious fingers for our jobs. Importantly, we need them to use our mobiles too.

If you have mild carpal tunnel syndrome, I have a few remedies for you. Read on to discover the simple methods to unburden your fingers. Are you ready?

A Pain You Cannot Ignore:

Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by a tingling sensation or numbness or intense pain in the wrist and fingers. You can feel this discomfort in the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring fingers.

This is due to the median nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist from the forearm. Our ‘pinkie’ finger is not connected to the nerve. When the median nerve is compressed due to other causes, carpal tunnel syndrome occurs (1). It leads to,

  • Wrist pain
  • Intense pain in fingers
  • Sensations like electric jolts
  • Shooting pain in the forearm
  • Shoulder ache
  • Weakened grip

Symptoms, if mild, can be tackled with simple remedies. Such prevention will keep the condition from turning serious.

Pain Today, Gone Tomorrow:

So, without ignoring the pain, use these remedies to manage it.

1. It’s Time For Break, Again:

You and your fingers need more breaks at work. No excuses. I must agree though, more coffee is probably a bad idea.

When you work at a keyboard or work a heavy machine all day, your wrist and fingers are under stress. Taking small but frequent breaks reduces symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (2). Stretch your fingers during these breaks.

2. Use Something Really Cold:

Your wrist can do with some cold treatment. If ice creams seem too messy, use ice cubes wrapped in a cloth. Apply the ice wrap once or twice for about 15 minutes in a span of 1 hour. It will reduce inflammation and ease pain.

3. Warm Water Feels So Relaxing:

Place your wrist in a bowl of warm water, and you wouldn’t want to take it back out. The warmth works like a charm at relaxing your muscles, cutting back the pain. Soak for 15 minutes at least to feel better. This method is helpful for those who suffer from Carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of wrist injuries.

4. Get Started On Drugs:

Ahem! Aspirin is a drug. So let’s get you started on that to deal with inflammation issues. NSAIDs like Aspirin and Ibuprofen are pain killers that reduce swelling from inflammation inside the wrist (3). The medicines will indirectly reduce pain as well.

5. Secure The Wrist And Put Action On Hold:

If carpal tunnel syndrome needs to be stopped in its tracks, your wrist needs a splint. It need not be iron, of course. Consult your doctor for the best course and once you have a splint, refrain from bending the wrist.

The splint will ensure the wrist remains straight, even while you sleep, thereby decreasing symptoms.

6. Find The Hidden Yogi In You:

If there is a hidden yogi inside you, bring her out as soon as you can. This is your opportunity to take carpal tunnel into your own hands and treat it for good.

Yoga exercises that systematically stretch and strengthen your arms, wrists and joints were found to prevent the condition. The exercises ease wrist pain too.

7. Banana Obsession Is Good:

Eating more bananas, just like our beloved minions, is good for the wrist. Bananas are a rich source of vitamin B6, sufficient of which can reduce the frequency of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Low levels of vitamin B6 combined with higher vitamin C levels were linked to symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. So, binge on bananas and also potatoes, sunflower seeds, broccoli and salmon.

You do need a massage, for your wrist. Take a little warm mustard oil and ask Mr. Bugs Bunny to step down to your hands. Mustard oil has anti-inflammatory qualities that are known for ages to treat joint pains.

Massage the palm, wrist, fingers and the back of the hand for 15 minutes until blood circulation improves. This will ease numbness while reducing pain.

9. Pineapple Has A Solution Called Bromelain:

Bromelain is an enzyme supplement obtained from pineapples. It helps decrease inflammation in the wrist by digesting inflammatory proteins. Over a few weeks, swelling and pain get reduced.

Maybe the wrist needs a longer time to heal. Avoid stress on the affected hand for at least 2 weeks and allow the nerves to relax. Meanwhile, practice gentle exercises designed to strengthen the wrist and arm. You can also consider reflexology, where mild pressure is applied on strategic areas to provide relaxation.
