Have you ever stopped to think about those bath towels and bathroom rugs that we use every single day of our lives? They sure need some love! Take a look and find out what I am talking about.

It’s a routine. You shower, you wipe your clean body dry, and you dry out your towel in the sun. The towel seems extremely fresh too. So why would you want to wash it frequently, right?

Makes sense, but I am sure you would want to hear this: each time you wipe your body, you also wipe off dead skin cells, which collect themselves on the fibers of your towel. So the longer you use your towel, without washing it, the more exfoliated cells remain collected on them. Sounds quite gross, doesn’t it? But it doesn’t end there. Every time your towel gets wet, there is a great chance of the growth of bacteria in the comfort of the dampness. So all in all, what seems like a fresh, clean towel actually houses dead skin, and bacteria.

So How Often Should You Wash Your Bath Towels?

Ideally, towels should be washed every three to five times they are used. Please note the fact that I said every three to five times the towels are used, and not every three to five days. This is the maximum that a towel can deal with getting wet, and drying up again. But it is also important for you to understand that this rule can be applied only if you dry your towel out, properly after each use. If the towels are not dried out properly after every use, there will be a million different things breeding in them, ranging from mildew to molds. Another quick fact, once mildew begins to grow on your towels, it is extremely hard to get them off it.

How Often Should You Wash Bathroom Rugs?

This question depends on certain factors: a) Does the rug have a rubber backing that prevents skidding? b) How often is your bathroom used? c) How much water is usually splashed on the floor?

To answer each question one by one, if the rug has a non-skid rubber backing, it will be unable to take the frequent washing. But it must be washed nonetheless, and not more than once in three to four weeks. Also, make sure you wash the rug in warm water as hot water will totally spoil the rubber backing. Using hot water on rubber-backed rugs will decrease its durability.

Coming to question b, if the bathroom is used frequently, it goes without saying that the rugs need to be washed as frequently as once every week. Taking more than two showers in a day means dampening of the rug many times, and since the rug is pitted against the floor, on the flooring that is cool means that it doesn’t have any place to breathe. This translates into a longer drying time. Therefore, it encourages the growth of mildew and mold. It is the perfect condition for the growth of all things yucky and disgusting!

Coming to question c, where in water is splashed many times on the rug, in this condition too, the rug again needs to be washed at least once every week. The reason is the same as the previous point. The damp warm conditions make a comfortable breeding pit, for everything unwanted.

Well, now that you know all about what happens behind the scenes to your towels and rugs, you should definitely be more mindful to how you care for them. As the saying goes, charity begins at home. It holds true because only when you begin to take heed of the smallest of things that can lead to catastrophe in the comforts of your home will you be able to fully protect yourself and your family against any kind of enemy. So what are you waiting for? Begin with what you know – the towels and rugs!
