Quite honestly, if there is one thing that always gathers everyone’s attention, it is the ‘fat/thin’, ‘healthy/unhealthy’ debate all over social media. Think about it. There’s always someone talking about it online.

Let’s go back a couple of months – the latest buzz back then was the thigh gap. One of the obnoxious ways of judging a person’s ‘thinness quotient’ was by knowing if their thighs touched each other. (Sounds strange, doesn’t it?)

Skinny jeans got skinnier, cosmetic surgeons got a new part of the human body to ‘trim’, and of course, the fashion industry just had a field day. But after all the hoo-haa died, some sensible people out there got the ‘It-is-ok-to-be-fat’ buzz around. But not for long. We are obsessed with strange concepts, and just when you think people have started to understand that it is important to be healthy, a new fad comes along making you question all sensibilities.

The Belly Button Challenge

So there is a new fad that is doing rounds in the social media – what started as a fun challenge on a Chinese network got viral and has managed to spark debates all over.

What you need to do is simple:

  1. Take a few deep breaths
  2. Tell yourself that you can do this (after all, self-confidence is the key)
  3. Extend your arm behind your back and wrap it around your waist
  4. Now try and touch your belly button with the same hand

Could you do it?  If you did, congrats! You, according to a bunch of teenagers (and a study in the US), are thin and fit. But if you couldn’t do it, you are free to go on a self-critical mode to decide if you are fit or fat.

The Expert Talk

Thousands of Chinese women uploaded their pictures successfully rising to the challenge, but for every woman who completed the task, there were several more that were wondering if their waist was too big or their fingers too short.

The real question is – does the inability to reach your belly button mean you need to lose weight? Well, any sensible person would give a NO, but these images tend to clog a person’s perception of what a ‘good figure’ means.

Truth Is..

The challenge gathered over 130 million hits and even had celebrities trying it out. But the good part was that not every thin person out there was able to reach the center of their tummy. There are several women who claim to weigh around 80-90 pounds, and yet could not do it.

What we love about this challenge is a chubby guy who photoshopped his way into completing the challenge and had everyone talking about its authenticity for hours.

Fitness experts have expressed their concern over the fad, suggesting and reassuring the ladies out there that it is more important to be healthy than completing such challenges.
