4:44 AM

Who doesn’t love relaxing salt baths, enjoying the soothing fragrance of lavender wafting through the water? These bath salts come in a petite little jar, and some are quite expensive, which may stop you from adding a few extra spoonfuls to your bath. But how about making lavender bath salts at home (which require minimal effort) that have all the benefits of the store-bought kind but cost less than half?

That would be something you wouldn’t want to skip, right? This post talks about the various ways you can prepare lavender bath salts at home, and even of their benefits. Are you interested in knowing more? Read on!

1. The Basic Recipe:

The basic lavender bath salt recipe entails using salt flakes and adding some essential oil to it. It may be orange blossom or rose or lavender, or whichever smell you like the best. To it, some baking soda is added to replicate the fizzy, bubbly effect you see when bath salts hit the water. This also helps in dispersing the essential oils.

You need:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt or magnesium salt flakes
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoon sea salt flakes
  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Making the salt is fairly simple. All you have to do is mix the ingredients well and store in airtight jars.
  2. A tip for mixing – buy a large Ziploc bag and tip in all the ingredients. Now shake the bag vigorously. This will uniformly coat the salt flakes in the lavender oil.

2. With Peppermint Oil:

Peppermint oil adds freshness to the bath salt because of the menthol present in it.

You need:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1 cup Himalayan sea salt
  • 1/3 cup kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops of peppermint oil
  • Green food coloring

Instructions:

  1. Mix the salts together and separate the mixture equally in two bowls.
  2. In one bowl, add the lavender buds and lavender oil. Mix well.
  3. In the other bowl, add 2 drops of the green color and mix well until you get a pale, even green.
  4. In a mason jar, add an inch thick layer of the green peppermint salt, followed by an inch thick layer of the lavender salt. Keep alternating layers till the jar is full or you are out of salt.

This is a great visual treat and makes for a perfect party favour or a gift.

3. With Jojoba Oil:

If you live in a fairly dry area, you will greatly benefit from the moisturizing effects of jojoba oil, which has a composition very close to our skin’s own oil. It nourishes the skin, and when you soak in a Jojoba and lavender oil bath salt for twenty minutes, you will feel like you are back from a luxurious spa.

You need:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • ¼ cup coarse sea salt
  • 15 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil

Instructions:

  1. In a glass bowl, mix the Epsom salt, sea salt and jojoba oil together. The jojoba oil is the carrier oil here, so its quantity can be increased a little if you feel your skin is greatly dehydrated.
  2. Finally, mix in the lavender oil and seal in a glass jar.

4. With Added Vitamin E:

Vitamin E rejuvenates your skin. This bath salt helps in removing the outer layer of dry, flaky skin and even nourishes your nail cuticles.

You need:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup sea salt
  • 1 cup milk powder
  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil (jojoba, almond, olive, apricot kernel etc.)
  • 2 vitamin E capsules
  • ½ cup dried lavender buds

Instructions:

  1. Mix the salts, soda and baking powder in a glass bowl with a metal spoon. Add the carrier oil and mix well.
  2. Add the lavender buds and essential oil and mix.
  3. Make a hole in the vitamin E capsules with a needle and drain the oil into the salt mix. Toss this around to incorporate the oils.
  4. Store in an airtight jar.

Rainbow Lavender Bath Salt:

If you are planning to make bath salt for your guests as a return gift or a party favour, or are planning to give a large jar of lavender salt as a housewarming gift, you can make this DIY rainbow-colored lavender bath salt.

For this, you need to prepare a large batch of the basic lavender bath salt recipe (described at the beginning), and divide it into six Ziploc bags. Now add two drops of violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and red colors in each of the six bags respectively. Shake the bags to mix the color evenly. Now layer the colored salts one by one in a large mason jar – putting red at the bottom and topping off with violet, just like a rainbow.

The various benefits of lavender bath salts are:

  1. They help in exfoliating dead skin cells and make the skin soft and smooth.
  2. Bathing with lavender bath salt relieves muscle tension and reduces minor rashes, calluses and skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and athlete’s foot.
