Brushing Your Tongue Can Save Your Life

11:23 AM

Were you aware that our tongue reflects the health of our internal organs? We usually brush or floss twice a day, some people even do it after every meal, but most often we ignore taking care of our tongue. Dentists insist that whether it is just to maintain good oral health or to prevent bad breath, cleaning the tongue is very important.

Drinking coffee turns it reddish-brown while drinking wine turns it red. So, in short, our tongue is just as much of a target for bacteria as our teeth are.

Cleaning the tongue is a practice that has been around since ancient times and even Ayurveda recommends it to be a part of everybody’s daily self-care regimen. It removes the ama, i.e., toxic debris that build up in the body. While we sleep, our digestive system detoxifies itself, and this leads to deposition of toxins in the form of buildup over the tongue. Thus, it is very important to brush your tongue regularly.

While you brush your teeth, you can simultaneously scrape your tongue as well. Here’s how you can brush/scrape your teeth:

1. Once you’re done with brushing your teeth, scrape your tongue gently with the help of your toothbrush. You can also use tongue scrapers to do so.

2. Now, using a toothbrush, scrape the front part of your tongue, then the middle, followed by the back.

3. Rinse your mouth several times with a mouthwash or plain water.

Doing this regularly prevents coughs, colds, and other inflammations in the body. By removing the build-up from the surface of the tongue, it automatically improves your ability to taste and enjoy different flavors of the food.

Tongue scraping removes the bacteria, dead cells, food debris, and fungi from the surface of the tongue. Thus, it also helps in preventing the mouth from stinking. It contributes to better oral health as it removes the bacteria that causes tooth decay, periodontal problems, and gum decay. Scraping the tongue regularly also stimulates and massages the internal organs, the same way acupuncture or acupressure does.

Could we have ever guessed how beneficial tongue scraping is for our health? So, wait no longer and make tongue scraping an important part of your daily healthcare regimen.
