What could be more beautiful than the ever expanding definition of beauty itself? Some women in the fashion industry have redefined the idea of beauty, and inspired and motivated women all around the world by demonstrating that beautiful people are not always the same size, color, or gender, but every individual is beautiful and unique in her own way.

Here’s a list of women who are taking the definition of beauty to the next level:

1. Robyn Lawley

The 25-year-old Australian model has been the first “plus-size” model to shoot for a number of magazines. She doesn’t consider herself a plus-size model at all. “I consider myself a model because I’m trying to help women, in general, accept their bodies”, says Robyn.

This transgender model was first discovered by Riccardo Tisci, senior designer at Givenchy. Later in 2010, she became the face of Givenchy. And then, she became one of the most in-demand supermodels in the world. She started appearing in various magazine editorials and on runways as well. She had everything – beauty and fame along with a big paycheck. She was born as a male, and as she started growing up, she started questioning her sexuality. “Realizing that I like the same sex was a taboo for me”, expressed Lea T. on The Oprah Show.

Lea T. also became the face of Redken in 2014, making her the first transgender model to front a cosmetic brand. She also said that she loves working with Redken because they believe in the individuality of a person and appreciate all kinds of beauty.

3. Jamie Brewer

Known for her role in American Horror Story, the 30-year-old actress was the first model with Down syndrome to walk in NYFW as a part of Hammer’s “Role Models, Not Runway Models”. It was a project that invited inspiring women to showcase Carrie Hammer’s work.

“Jamie has a beautiful figure with a small waist”, says Hammer.

4. Carmen Dell’Orefice

 

There is no stopping this 83-year-old model. She recently appeared on the cover page of Harper’s Bazaar, Thailand and is considered as the “oldest working model”. She started her modeling career at the age of 15 and was first seen on the cover page of Vogue, and since then, she has been working with number of famous brands. She took a short retirement after her second marriage in 1958 and then resumed working after a while. Now, you can see her in the campaigns for Target and Rolex, and in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, W, and Vogue.

Denise Bidot is the first international plus-size model to walk the runways of NYFW in 2014,  and a TV personality. She works for curvy women and self-love. Her work and dedication towards brands such as Levi’s, Old Navy, Forever 21, and many others have positioned her as a leading figure for women of all sizes.

She walked on the runways of NYWF 2014 for the brand Zizzi, and this was her first debut as a leading model. Denise was also a part famous TV shows such as NuvoTV’s Curvy Girls and Jennifer Lopez’s TV network.

At present, she is represented by Muse Models in NYC. Being a single parent to her little one, Joselyn, she continues to focus and spread the message of “being you is what defines real beauty” worldwide. She is now one of the most recognizable plus-size models and household names in the world.

6. Rain Dove

Rain Dove is one personality who is breaking down the gender binary of the fashion world. She turned plenty of heads at the NYFW as she walked the runway in both menswear and womenswear.

In a recent interview, Dove said, “I model as male, female, and everything in between. I model as all genders. I model as a human being.” She also adds, “The gender thing doesn’t exist at all; it’s just a social construct that you don’t have to fit into.”

Dove is much more than a pretty face and believes in the fact, “Beauty doesn’t have a gender. If you’re confident with who you are, you’re attractive.”

The fashion industry has got a new leading lady who is redefining the global definition of beauty with her stunning images. She was diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of four, and spent her youth being bullied and tormented for her skin disease. In spite of that, she believed in her internal beauty and modelesque features, and posted a YouTube video in 2011 where she talked about her disease. Her message and her beauty resonated with fans all around the world. Today, this 19-year-old model is walking on runways all around the world.

8. Jillian Mercado

The 28-year-old model had spastic muscular dystrophy since she was a young girl, but this didn’t stop her from reaching her career goals in the fashion industry. She’s been working with fashion magazines, invited to big runways shows, and has also worked behind the scenes as a style editor. Even though she uses a wheel chair, it doesn’t restrict her striking beauty. She can be seen campaigning for Diesel and Nordstorm.

Elliot Sailors entered the fashion world by modeling for womenswear for some of the well-known brands, but now, she is modeling as both male and female to achieve a longer career. After cutting her hair short, she has started modelling for menswear again. She is a very tall, very beautiful, and a very happily married woman, and harbors no desire to be a man. In an interview, she said, “As far as my body is concerned, I never felt like I was born in the wrong body, that’s just not something that I’ve dealt with.”

Andreja Pejić is an Australian model who broke new ground by appearing on multiple runways for designers such as Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, where she walked in both menswear and womenswear.

After a sex reassignment surgery in 2014, she came out publicly as a transgender and got transformed from an androgynous model to a female model.

She isn’t the blue-eyed and blonde-haired Scandinavian model that we typically see on the runways. The Canadian beauty is a First Nation model who recently walked in her first NYFW. She was told from the beginning that her looks would never work and no client will ever want to work with her. Jade says, “I don’t fall into any category, I’m in a category all my own, and that can be tough at times.”

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and these personalities have proved it.
