Psoriasis – An Overview:

Psoriasis is a type of skin condition and occurs due to faulty genes and a weak immune system (1). The skin cells grow faster than they are shed, due to which new skin cells start piling up on the surface of the old unshed cells, thereby causing lesions. It mostly affects the lower back, scalp, knees and elbows. Causes of psoriasis are complex, and the disease can be transmitted merely by coming in direct contact with the patient. People with a family history of psoriasis are more at a risk of contracting this disease, although everyone, including men and women of all ages can get it.

Curcumin – The Active Ingredient In Turmeric:

Turmeric root has been used for centuries to make medicines. The health and cosmetic benefits of turmeric are well known, and many research studies have acknowledged the efficiency of turmeric in treating skin diseases and other related conditions. So, what makes turmeric so effective in treating skin problems?

Studies have revealed that turmeric can be used in a good amount without any side effects or the risk of toxicity. That is why it has been widely recommended for treating serious skin diseases such as skin cancer, psoriasis and scleroderma, and tumors of duodenum, skin, pancreas, breast and colon. Turmeric consists of an active ingredient known as curcumin, which protects the skin by attacking the harmful free radicals and keeping the inflammation at bay (2).

The nuclear factor KB inhibition present in turmeric improves collagen deposits and aids in the faster healing of wounds. Thus, turmeric acts as a wonderful proangiogenic agent. The powerful antioxidants found in curcumin ensure that the skin is well protected from infection, and a further onset of psoriasis is restricted.

The turmeric rhizome or the roots are the primary source of curcumin, and constitute several health benefitting components such as growth and transcription factors, inflammatory cytokines, and various enzymes. These factors attribute the turmeric the powerful ability to control the disease-causing molecular pathways.

What Do The Studies Reveal?

  • A study conducted by the National Institute of Health, Washington, D.C., has revealed that the turmeric extract heals the wounds and reduces the inflammation faster than any other natural ingredient. Hence, it is ideal for combating psoriasis conditions (3).
  • The National Psoriasis Foundation has said that turmeric works wonderfully well by minimizing the skin flare-ups caused by psoriasis.
  • In a cohort study, it was found that when a gel with turmeric as the main component was applied on the lesions of psoriasis patients, they showed significant reduction in a few days, and within 8 weeks of the treatment all the symptoms of psoriasis were resolved (4).

How To Use Turmeric For Treating Psoriasis:

You can use turmeric in different ways for treating psoriasis::

  • Include it in the daily diet.
  • Apply a paste of turmeric powder and water to the affected areas.
  • Take turmeric capsules daily as a supplement.
  • Replace your morning tea with a drink of turmeric and warm milk. Add organic honey to enhance the taste and the healing effect.
  • Turmeric and ginger can be taken together to get relief from psoriasis.

How Much Turmeric Is Enough?

Turmeric is available in the drugstore in the form of fluid extracts, tincture or capsules. More often, Bromelain is added to the capsules or the tincture to improve the anti-inflammatory effect of the treatment. Although there is no recommended dosage for the children, adults should take around 400 to 600 mg of turmeric supplements or powder thrice a day.

Drinking Turmeric For Faster Relief:

The body quickly absorbs the nutrients in the fluid. Hence, if you want to improve the recovery rate of the lesions, try consuming turmeric drink every morning for a few days. And you would be surprised to see the amazing way in which it works.

How To Make The Turmeric Drink?

The process is quite simple! Just mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder with plain water or any juice you prefer to drink, along with one teaspoon of black pepper. It is super effective, and looking at the very small investment it takes to buy a turmeric bag, you will readily forget the unpleasant taste the powder adds to the drink.

Within a few days, you will start noticing the lesions wearing off, the skin problem slowly resolving, and that too by using one of the cheapest treatments you could have possibly thought of. To get rid of the nasty taste, use a pinch of turmeric powder in your lemonade or favorite marinade.

Rubbing Turmeric On The Psoriasis Patches:

Those who have used turmeric in packs and for healing wounds must be aware of the havoc one pinch of turmeric powder can cause. Be ready to have yellow hands and clothes for days together if you do not use turmeric with utmost care. For ensuring that the turmeric does not stain your clothes or hands, cover them with plastic covers prior to applying it on the affected areas.

You either rub the dry powder on the psoriasis patches, or make a paste of turmeric and water and use it for application. For keeping the scaly skin hydrated, you can mix turmeric powder with Vaseline or mineral oil. To avoid staining, you can buy the powder with the dye removed at the grocery store or just pick up the pure curcumin extracts. However, the effect is just amazing and within a few days, you will find the psoriasis inflammation gone and the skin looking soft and clean.

Precautions To Be Taken:

Turmeric supplements should not be taken for long periods or in excess as they can cause ulcers or diarrhea. Turmeric has a tendency to interact with conventional medications and several other herbal supplements. Hence, if you are taking any other drugs or herbal preparations, consult your doctor first before trying the turmeric treatment. Breastfeeding and pregnant women should avoid turmeric supplements.

So, if used according to the instructions and in prescribed dosage, turmeric is certainly helpful in treating psoriasis.
