Does a migraine make each day of your life a living hell? Well, there is finally some good news for you – according to experts, people who suffer from migraine headaches could gain relief by taking aspirin tablets.

Researchers have found that one in four people who suffer from migraines could be free from pain within two hours by taking up to 1,000 mg of this wonder drug in one go. Now that’s something really good to know, isn’t it?

Would you like to know more about how aspirin can help treat your migraine pain? Then do read this post.

Aspirin – An Overview:

Aspirin is a highly popular medicine that helps in fighting inflammation, pain, fever and a variety of other ailments. In 1950, it was included in the book of Guinness World Records as the best-selling medicine for pain, and in 1969, astronauts took it to the moon on the Apollo 11. Aspirin is different from other drugs in the NSAID group as it helps in lowering the risk of heart attack, and this is why it is known as a wonder drug.

How Does Aspirin Affect Migraine?

Many people use aspirin for the prevention of migraines. However, they often avoid long-term use because of its effect on the stomach. It can increase the risk of stomach ulceration and irritation. This drug can also be taken during the warning phase, or migraine prodrome, as a way to stop the symptoms and prevent the onset of a full-blown migraine headache.

Since it is well-known for effectively relieving pain, migraine sufferers often use it as an abortive treatment when they are experiencing a mild or a moderate headache that is caused by migraines. This drug has an effervescent formulation, i.e., it fizzes when added to water, which is why it can provide relief more rapidly than tablets that are swallowed. Aspirin can stop the body from producing certain substances that result in fever, pain, blood clots and swelling.

Aspirin’s Efficacy In Combating Migraines:

In 2010, a study was conducted to review 13 clinical trials of the use of aspirin in people who suffer from migraines. It looked at how this drug provided relief from migraines to these sufferers compared to those who used inactive placebo sugar pills. The results of that study are as follows:

  • Moderate or severe pain caused by migraines became better or mild in 2 hours by 52% among aspirin users and 32% among placebo sugar pill users.
  • Aspirin users also found relief from migraine symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light and noise.
  • Combining aspirin in a high dose with metoclopramide, an anti-nausea drug, could reduce nausea more effectively than aspirin on its own.

It is not fully understood why aspirin works well on migraines and its symptoms like disturbances in vision. According to experts, it could be due to the drug’s ability to regulate serotonin, the brain chemical, or the anti-inflammatory properties it has.

Warnings:

As mentioned, taking aspirin too often in large doses can result in stomach irritation. It can also cause tinnitus, higher probability of bleeding, etc. Always keep in mind that it should not be used to treat children’s migraines. It is important to remember that this drug is not recommended in the following cases:

  • Gastric bleeding or stomach ulcers
  • A history of asthma induced by aspirin
  • Problems with blood clotting
  • An existing feeling of ear ringing

For many people, an over-the-counter drug like aspirin can be an effective treatment for migraine headaches. However, it depends on the severity of the pain you experience. You should remember to talk to your health care provider before you decide on a treatment for migraines so that the best one can be recommended.
