Understanding Aromatherapy Better:

Aromatherapy makes use of aromatic plant extracts for preparing essential oils. These oils are rich in healing properties and can heal both the mind and the body when used in the right combination. Aromatherapy has been carried out in different cultures for thousands of years. Latest studies suggest that the essential aromatic oils can be a new intervention in the field of medicine to treat various forms of arthritis (1).

Unlike what many people believe, aromatherapy does not mean using aromatic oils to spread aroma in a room or the bath. The therapists who practice aromatherapy are experts in using the different essential oils in various ways. The main idea is to influence the olfactory system (through inhaling) as it is directly connected to the brain.

The inhalation stimulates the brain and works as a signal to control various emotions that take place in the limbic system. The process triggers the release of hormones that positively influence the physical and emotional state of a person, thereby making him feel stimulated, relaxed and calm.

How Can Aromatherapy Help In Treating Arthritis?

Today, aromatherapy is used widely to treat different ailments including arthritis. Many practitioners of contemporary medicine also recommend their patients to take aromatherapy when the pain and inflammation are beyond the control of regular medications. Different essential oils are used in the ideal proportions and combinations to ease the inflammation and pain caused due to arthritis.

According to Nadine Tavener, an aromatherapist, each essential oil has its own properties and depending upon the intensity and type of the symptoms of arthritis, the treatment is decided. The special properties of the essential aromatic oils are attributed to the organic chemical components present in them. For example, most of the essential oils contain two anti-inflammatory and analgesic components – linalool and linalyl acetate. These are present in higher concentrations in most of the aromatic essential oils derived from plant species, and are highly effective in relieving joint and arthritis pain.

Linalool and linalyl acetate are also effective in easing stress. Some of the plants that contain linalyl acetate in higher concentrations include bergamot and lavender. Research suggests that around 200 aromatic plant species constitute pain relieving and anti-inflammatory linalool.

While how it exactly works has not been justified, some in the field of study suggest that when you breathe in the aroma of these oils, they stimulate your brain in a positive way, thereby influencing the receptors that are associated with physical and emotional health (2).

Aromatic Essential Oils For Arthritis:

Each aromatic essential oil has its own utility and helps in relieving the symptoms like pain, depression and loss of mobility caused due to arthritis (3). Lavender, bergamot, German chamomile, lemon and Roman chamomile are some of the oils that are effective as antidepressants. Vanilla is known to reduce stress and induce relaxation, and can also help ease the physical and mental demands of arthritis.

In many cases, aromatherapy is recommended in adjunction with the physical therapy for stimulating the blood circulation in the joints in order to control inflammation, pep up energy levels and manage pain. The aromatherapy sessions are to be carried out simultaneously with the physical therapy for more prolonged and pronounced benefits.

Aromatic Massage:

Essential oils have a great ability to get absorbed by the skin, and hence, aromatherapy prescribes massage therapy for treating arthritis. It provides speedy relief and is highly effective against common arthritis symptoms such as muscle fatigue, tension, or spasms. According to Bernadette Brennan, the leading holistic aromatherapist, several essential oils reduce arthritis pain, and also help in treating injury or muscular problems.
