Are you curious to know more? Then this post is a must-read for you!

What Is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea is basically tapioca that resembles bubbles when they move up through the straw. It is also commonly called black pearl tea, pearl milk tea, pearl shake, tapioca tea, ball drink, etc. It first originated in Taiwan, and as of today has become the most favored drink in China and also in some areas of the Western U.S. The drink is extremely popular with both adults and children. The chewiness of the small tapioca pearls makes it more preferable. Although it is much sweeter, it is worth including in your diet occasionally.

Contents Of Bubble Tea:

Bubble tea is a vast term that includes a wide range of non-carbonated, sweet and non-alcoholic drinks. The varieties include:

  • Tea, brewed or made from concentrate
  • Non-dairy additive or milk to make the drink creamy
  • Lots of sweetener
  • Tapioca balls

The base of bubble tea is jasmine, or black or green tea. Many shops also add different fruit flavours, including honeydew, passion fruit, strawberry, mango and kiwi. There is nothing traditional about preparing bubble tea as it originated few decades ago, around the 1980s, and hence you will never find one traditional bubble tea recipe or variety. The simplest one is a sweetened black or green tea with the pearls at the bottom. If you do not like to make that chewy effort, you can abstain from tea with the tapioca and instead choose a boba-iced fruit shake, coffee drinks and smoothies.

Following are the benefits of bubble tea:

1. Good Source Of Carbohydrates:

To start with, the tea is a staple in some native diets, is a good source of carbohydrates, and provides quick energy. Surely a good way to kick-start the day.

2. Improves Cardiovascular Conditions:

Since the base of this drink is tea, it comes with all the benefits of the polyphenols and phenols that are present in the green and black teas. These components have a favorable impact on cardiovascular conditions.

3. Promotes Weight Loss:

Bubble tea is brewed with natural substances sans any artificial flavouring, and can promote weight loss to some extent. But the loads of sweeteners that you consume with the drink lowers its health value, and even the added fruits are not in the amount that could benefit your health in some way. Moreover, to cut down on the expenses, many tea shops offer bubble teas with fake fruit flavours and use sugary fruit concentrates, thereby lowering the nutritional worth of the drink. So, to ensure you are losing calories, you need to stick to the natural bubble tea version.

4. Boosts Metabolism:

To get the exceptional benefits from this tea, you should choose unsweetened boba tea (but very few shops serve it). Hence, you will really have to make time to hunt down such a shop. Just like green tea, when taken without any artificial flavours and sweeteners, bubble tea can be a good drink for diabetic patients as it boosts metabolism and promotes weight loss.

5. Fights Cancer Cells:

In some cases, bubble tea has been found to help the immune system fight cancerous cells. Studies at The University of Maryland Medical Center have revealed that drinks with green teas as the base can kill cancer cells.

Bubble Tea Recipe:

To avoid the negative effects of artificial toppings in the bubble tea, it is best to prepare it yourself, so that you are aware of what you are drinking.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup dried black tapioca pearls
  • ½ cup white sugar or 1 cup honey
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 3 black tea bags
  • 2 cups dairy or almond milk or few tbsp sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice
  • Frozen fruits, extracts or powders for additional flavours as per preference

Method:

  1. Take a large pot of water and bring it to a boil over high heat.
  2. Add the pearls and continue boiling, stirring in between for around 15 minutes.
  3. Turn the heat off and cover the pot with a lid.
  4. 4. Let it sit for 15 minutes.

While the pearls of tapioca are being boiled, you can make simple syrup simultaneously on another flame.

  1. Take a saucepan and boil 1 cup of water, and sugar or honey.
  2. Keep on stirring over medium heat.
  3. Once it reaches the boiling point, keep it aside until the pearls are ready.
  4. Steep the tea bags in 2 cups of boiling water for 4 minutes and let them cool.
  5. When the pearls become ready, drain them and stir into the syrup gently.
  6. Let the pearls sit in the syrup for 15 minutes.
  7. Take two glasses and distribute the tapioca pearls in two glasses.
  8. Mix milk, tea and the desired flavour in a cocktail shaker along with a few ice cubes.
  9. Shake vigorously and pour it in the glass with the pearls.

It may take a few cups of bubble tea for you to get used to its flavour. But a cup of tea is sure to do you a lot of good. Try this tea and recommend it to your family and friends!
