5:44 AM

If you thought that false lashes were some brainy beauty’s ingenious invention to make YOUR lashes look uber hot, you are mistaken. If you didn’t know who wore fake lashes made from mink and diamonds, how can you call yourself a false diva?

There are fun things to know about all those cosmetics available out there. You just need to hit the right source (and that’s obviously us) and get all the amusing trivia.

Here is a list of facts about false lashes that will completely blow your mind:

1. The Story Of The Lashes:

The Story Of The Lashes

A long, long time ago (1916), a moviemaker wanted his leading lady to have lashes so long that they would brush her cheeks when she blinked. He made it happen. The director was D.W. Griffith, and the actress was Seena Owen.

Even before 1916, which is like the nineteenth century, a lovely little lady called Mrs. Pomery ran a beauty salon at Bond Street, London. And this foresighted fashionista used cut bits of her clients’ mane and sewed them onto their lids (sounds quite nasty, doesn’t it?).

3. But It’s a True Story:

If you love makeup, you would definitely know the brand Max Factor. Well, Max Factor is the man behind the brand and he bestowed actress Phyllis Haver with a set of falsies. This definitely stirred up some curiosity. He used Mrs. Pomery’s funda of sewing up Haver’s original hair onto her lashes.

4. Its Origins Lied In A Fringe:

Apparently, the first ever detachable lashes were made from a fringe that was strung onto a thread. This delicate, flimsy little fringe could then be glued onto the eyelid. Quite interesting, eh?

5. Hairy Scary:

I don’t know whether this should be deemed scary or funny, but it is quite interesting to know. An artist called Jessica Harrison used the legs of dead flies and attached them onto the lids. (Eeewwww!!) To top it all, she named her unique yet irksome technique, flylashes. (ROTFL)

6. Chiggywiggy Twiggy (That Was Random):

And when the hue and cry about the lovely long luscious lashes died down after the 1930s and 1940s, English super model, Twiggy, brought them back in vogue. Way back in the 1960s, she recreated the lash mania by painting her lashes. That was one hell of an iconic look, which made women all across swoon over falsies again.

7. Let’s Talk About Ardell (It Is Ardell And Not Adele If You Thought That Was A Mistake):

The commercial falsies were made in the 1970s (1971, to be precise). A so-called Mr. Arnold Miller, along with his wife Sydell, commissioned a company called Ardell (Ardell is Arnold+Sydell, if you haven’t guessed it yet). It was their sworn mission to make tools to give women the most beautiful looking eyes. They propelled Ardell Duralashes (the individual faux lashes), which are available till date.

8. Jenny On The Block:

The Academy Awards in 2001 saw Jennifer Lopez with a pair of red fox fur lashes, courtesy ShuUemura. (Sounds Fancy!!!) Of course, it got a lot of tongues wagging (thanks to the use of fox fur), but the concept of luxe lashes caught on like wild fire. The only thing left for ShuUemura to do next was to open a Tokyo Lash Bar in 2004. This was a high-end kiosk, which showcased a collection of seasonal lashes.

9. And Now To Answer The Question I Posed At The Beginning:

It was Madonna who wore the most expensive lashes that were retailed at $ 10,000. ShuUemura custom made the falsies for the pop queen, encrusting 0.75 carat diamonds onto the mink. Just when you think no one would have bought those at that price, I should let you know that they were totally sold out!

Now that you know a little more about falsies than you did five minutes ago, it’s time to head out and buy your pair now!
