Why Use Tea Tree Oil For Boils:

Boils are caused mostly by infections affecting your hair follicles on the skin surface (1). They cause inflammation, pain and at times fever. When the blood cells try to combat the infection, the boils start turning bigger and swelled. They also become tender. While treating them at a doctor’s office is possible, you can use tea tree oil. It has proven antibiotic and antifungal properties (2). It can get into the skin layers and fight the bacteria that lead to boil formation. Regular application of this oil can make boils vanish from the skin surface.

How To Treat Boils Using Tea Tree Oil:

  1. At first, you will need to wash the affected skin region with lukewarm water and a mild soap or an antibacterial fluid.
  2. Now, take a bowl and fill it with hot water and add a spoon of sea salt to it. Then keep a washcloth soaked in the water for some time.
  3. After a few minutes, keep the warm soaked cloth on the boils for sometime. Discard the cloth after that.
  4. Next, pour a few drops of tea tree oil directly on the boils. Rub the oil with fingers slowly. Ensure you wash your hands with soap afterwards.
  5. Cover the boils with a bandage.
  6. This can be done twice a day.
  7. After you follow this therapy at home for a few days, you will find the boils have become more swollen and tender. Then you can drain them without any worry. You will have to use tea tree oil soaked cotton balls to drain the boils. When they get tender, applying a little pressure on them should do the needful. If you need to apply more pressure, it means they are not swollen enough for draining.

Tips:

Use these tips to speed up your recovery from boils while using tea tree oil:

  1. You can also use a number of cotton balls instead of a washcloth to apply sea salt on the boils.
  2. It is necessary that the tea tree oil remains on the skin and gets soaked by it. So, do not wash off the boils with water after applying the tea tree oil on them.
  3. After draining the boils, you will feel relieved, but it is still necessary that you eliminate all the bacteria and germs. For this, you can apply tea tree oil on the skin affected by boils (after they are drained) for a week or so.
  4. You may also wash the skin with soaps containing tea tree oil for quicker and better results. The results should come within a week or so.

Caution:

While tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, people with sensitive skin may find it unsuitable for use. To ensure your skin does not develop problems after its application, test by applying the oil on a part of your skin. If it is too strong for your skin, try mixing it with olive oil. In case you are using this oil to treat the boils on a child, its better you get in touch with a doctor first.
