Constipation is so annoying. You can’t poo, and you don’t know what to do! You eat medicines, you drink water, and you eat specific foods! But don’t you wish there was something else you could do about it? Well, there is, and it is called Reflexology. Here we talk all about reflexology techniques that help ease your constipation quickly.

What Is Reflexology?

An alternative medicine therapy, reflexology involves using techniques to apply pressure to specific points on the soles, back of the hand, palms and the top of your foot to treat a condition. It follows the basic principle that the foot or hand has a unique system of zones. Applying pressure on these zones helps trigger physical changes in your body and helps relieve pain.

Reflexology is a pseudoscience and researchers remain inconclusive and dubious about the efficacy of reflexology for any ailment. If you experience chronic constipation, consult a doctor immediately (1).

Thumb Walking:

To perform reflexology effectively, you need to learn a basic technique called thumb walking. Thumb walking involves the use of a specific point on the thumb to apply pressure to the targeted reflex points on your sole.

  1. Use the tip of your thumbs to press and massage your foot.
  2. To perform thumb walking, you must press down on a reflex point with the tip of your thumb.
  3. Proceed to bend and straighten your thumb until it moves up your foot.
  4. To emulate the movement, keep the tip of your thumb on a flat surface and press down.
  5. Bend your thumb and straighten it. As you do so, you will notice it moves along the surface.
  6. When you massage your feet, you need to use thumb walking to get relief from constipation.

Reflexology Techniques For Constipation:

So, now that you know how to thumb walk, let us show you how to perform reflexology for constipation.

Begin massaging the arch of your foot.

  1. Start on the outer edge of the heel and follow a clockwise direction, thumb walking until the middle of the arch.
  1. Now, turn right and continue thumb walking until the edge of your foot.
  1. Continue thumb walking until you reach the outer edge of the heel.
  1. The zone that you cover thumb walking helps ease the large intestine, as it works the reflex points of the large intestine.
  1. While you thumb walk over the reflex point of the large intestine, you will end up circling around a point, forming a box.
  1. The area inside the box is where the reflex points for the small intestine lie.
  1. So, once you have traced the outline of the box, begin thumb walking on the inner edge of your heel and move up towards the middle of the arch, the thinnest part of your foot.
  1. Make sure you shift to the right and cover the entire area.
  1. Once you have covered the right foot, switch sides and repeat the same process on your left foot.
  1. The entire procedure should not take longer than 3 minutes for one foot.
  1. Repeat the procedure as often as you need.
  1. For best results, consume a lot of water before you perform the routine.

So, the next time you suffer from constipation, and you don’t know what to do, try massaging your reflex points. Reflexology may help you overcome constipation. If you know of any other techniques for relieving constipation, tell us about them here. Leave a comment below.
