How Nail Infection Occurs?
Nail infection usually occurs when one or more of your nails get a fungal infection (1). Initially, the infection may show up as a white or yellow spot below one’s nail. It can affect either a person’s finger nails or toe nails. Over time, if it is not attended to, the fungus spreads deeper and may result in discoloration of the nail.
The normal symptoms that may develop at this time are inflammation, swelling as well as yellowing of the nail (2). Sometimes, the nail may thicken or may even begin to crumble at the edges. When this happens, the infection can cause intense pain.
Nail fungus tends to develop when your nails are constantly exposed, for long periods, to warm, moist environments. This is because such conditions propagate the growth and spread of fungi. Activities like swimming or the act of sweating profusely can also lead to the formation of fungus due to the build-up of moisture in certain areas.
There are certain conditions, such as abnormal pH levels of the skin, a weak immune system and poor hygiene that cause the fungus to thrive more in certain individuals. If left untreated, it can cause more severe problems like cracking of the skin, splitting and even complete loss of the nail. However, the good news is that nail fungus is treatable, and, therefore, can be cured.
How Can Nail Fungus Be Treated?
There are a number of products that are now available in pharmacies and drugstores. In fact, the number of ointments and creams is so high that trying to find the right one is the major problem. Although there are available medicines, many of these contain chemical products that sometimes are seen to be more harmful to the skin. Due to this uncertainty about the effects of various chemical products, there is an organic product that has been found to be very effective in treating nail fungus – Tea Tree Oil.
Tea Tree Oil – A Well Known Treatment For Nail Fungus:
One well-known home remedy for treating nail fungus is the application of tea tree oil to the infected nail. It is known to be a good cure as it has antiseptic properties and has been used as a fungicide for years. However, the application must be proper to get the desired results. There are certain measures that should be taken while applying the oil. Some of them are given below.
1. Steps To Be Taken Before Applying The Oil:
Remove any dead nails with the help of a nail clipper. Try to remove as much of the surrounding dead skin as you possibly can. However, make sure you are very careful while doing this so as to avoid cutting your skin.
Use a coarse nail file to file down every nail that has been infected. You may first soften the nail by having a bath or just soaking the fingers in warm water to make the filing easier and less painful. Once again, while filing, try not to scratch the skin around the nail.
Clean your finger / toenails with water and soap to get rid of any nail dust.
2. Ways Of Applying Tea Tree Oil:
Once the above precautions are taken, you can then proceed to the application of the oil on the infected area. This can be done in a number of ways. A simple way would be to dab the infected area with a few drops of the oil. You can also apply a moderate amount of oil to a cotton ball and gently rub it on the infected area, and then leave the nail to dry.
Another way would be to make use of a toothbrush to gently scrub the nail with the oil. However, make sure you get rid of the toothbrush after this.
An alternative method that can be used is mixing the tea tree oil with some olive oil, forming a mixture. Then, rub the mixture onto the infected area. Apart from olive oil, it can also be mixed with coconut oil. Again, with the help of a cotton ball, this should be rubbed onto the nail. It should be left on for at least ten minutes before washing the hand clean. This mixture can be applied as often as you like.
Normal application of tea tree oil, however, should be done at least twice a day (3) – preferably in the morning and evening. It is important to repeat the filing procedure at least one to two times a week to remove any dead nail tissue that may be there. Sometimes, a bandage may be used to cover the affected nail, so as to keep it clean.
Thus, in conclusion, nail fungus is certainly not a pleasing sight and using tea tree oil is an easy and effective way to get rid of nail fungus. Although the treatment may take time to produce the desired results, within a month or two improvement can be seen. Hence, being an organic product, tea tree oil has less adverse effects, and is the sure path to having your nails looking normal and beautiful once again.
