5 Silly Makeup Mistakes You Should Stop Making Right Away
5:29 AMIt usually takes every woman most of her twenties to figure out a makeup routine and style that suits her, along with tons of trial and error experiments, of course. The chances of getting lost along the way are at an all time high as social media and the Internet are ripe with cosmetic inspiration—everything from Jlo’s forever-bronzed cheeks to Rihanna’s mulberry lipstick obsession.
How can you be sure if a trend that works for someone else will look just a great on you? That’s where most of us trip up and end up look older, and not necessarily wiser beyond our years. To help you avoid the potholes of makeup madness, here’s a list of five mistakes you could easily avoid, and result in the best looking makeup skills of your life!

ERROR #1: Wearing The Wrong Foundation And Wearing Too Much Of It
My heart goes out to every ‘ghost’ picture I’ve seen on Instagram of pretty girls wearing the wrong shade of foundation—it’s usually too light and looks like the head and body are two separate entities. When you use a base that is too light, your skin looks flat instead of natural. On the other hand, using a shade or two too dark to ‘highlight’ your face just makes it look heavy.
The Fix:
Only use foundation where you need to camouflage discolouration. Buy liquid formulas that have light-diffusing pigments or a tinted moisturiser. Find a colour that makes your skin tone as close as possible and blend it evenly across your face and neck.
ERROR #2: Choosing A Lipstick That Is Too Dark Or Too Matte
Your lips will lose their shape as you age, so you’ll want to steer clear of dark colours as they give the illusion of a smaller pout and fall flat on your lips.
The Fix:
Make your lips appear more full, and well, plump by choosing a pink, peach or light red that has a glossy, hydrating finish. Matte lipsticks are a big no-no as they will emphasise the lines around your lips. Choose bright lipsticks or choose a hydrating lip stain instead.
MISTAKE # 3: Skipping Eyeliner For Under Eye Kohl
This admittedly lazy habit is also blasphemy in makeup terms. But the bottom liner just pulls your features down, making your eyes look smaller, and your face older.
The Fix:
You’ve gotta use that eyeliner to open up and brighten your mug—ensure it’s a thin liner that’s as close to your lash line as you can manage. Also, skip the black and opt for a brown that is less harsh and blends better.
MISTAKE #4: Wearing The Wrong Blush Too High On Your Face
Never, ever pick a blush in the brown family of shades. You may think it’s adding definition, but really, it’s just adding age. Also, skip blush on the apples of your cheeks, it just draws attention to loose skin.
The Fix:
Match the natural colour of your cheeks to find the right shade of blush. Apply the colour on the highest point of your cheekbones and lift it upwards to cover the whole cheekbone. Steer clear of the nose.
MISTAKE #5: Ignoring Your Brow Game
Your eyebrows probably aren’t a priority when you’re younger, but as you grow older, they get thinner and they stop growing back. The wrong eyebrow pencils and powders make you look washed out.
The Fix:
Look for a product that is the same shade as your hair. Brush up your brows consistently and follow up by bringing the colour through your arch, all the way to the square head of your brow.
