Children And Yoga:

Yoga’s systematic approach has a calming and rejuvenating effect on our mind and body. Kindergarten children will find it just as helpful, considering the conflicting emotions they always go through. At this age, they are naturally flexible and would welcome any chance to contort their bodies in various ways.

Kindergarten yoga is taught using stories that appeal to a child’s imagination. The stories would feature animals, which the child would imitate. These imitations are modified forms of traditional yoga poses that improve focus, balance and co-ordination. The poses calm down young children, making them more disciplined and confident.

Kindergarten yoga is also a peaceful haven of relaxation for a stressed child (1). It can improve his or her mood, helping the child stay motivated to come back to school. According to certain studies, exercise from yoga can stimulate neurogenesis in the brain and enhance cognitive control in children (2).

Yoga teachers say that school curriculums must allow at least 45 minutes of such inner peace for children. It helps them cope better with their fast-paced learning environment. Kindergarten yoga is a combination of meditation, deep breathing, exercises and moral teachings.

Here are some of the yoga poses well-liked by children.
