15 Things You Should Give Up To Be Happy
7:59 AMLife is not a bed of roses and, in most cases, happiness is not a coincidence. It comes by choice – a choice millions are making around the world every day. So what’s stopping you? Let’s look at some of the things you should give up to be happy:
1. Trying To Be Perfect
Nobody can be perfect, and you are likely to burn yourself trying to go down that road. Studies prove that you are bound to be happier if you can intentionally draw attention to your imperfections and laugh about them. Be yourself in all your flawed, imperfect glory.
2. Trying To Control Everything
Life is full of difficult situations that are beyond our control. As human beings, we associate control with certainty. We want to be in charge of our future and not worry about what will happen next. But no matter how much we fool ourselves into believing that, there is no guarantee to anything in life. Control is counterproductive and harmful for long-term happiness. So, dance to the music, don’t try and change it.
3. Playing The Blame Game
From regrettable acts of road rage to mass casualties, we have seen everyone indulge in this pastime called ‘playing the blame game’. Are you a ‘blame gamer’ too? Remember, blaming someone else is not the answer. A negative situation is not really anyone’s fault. Accept yourself and your situations unconditionally.
4. Running Away From Your Fears
Don’t run from your fears, face them. Make a list of what is blocking you and try and deal with each in a practical manner. Rationalize with yourself – what will happen if you fail? Chalk out a plan B. Be open minded and receptive to newer opportunities. Miracles will happen.
5. Comparing Yourself With Others
There will always be someone better than you – someone with more money, a better job, better physical features, and more. There is no end to the comparison game. You can only control your life. So don’t waste your energy on others. Focus inwards and celebrate who you are.
6. Pleasing Everyone Around
People who are eager to please others are known to suffer to suffer from low esteem. Don’t be selfish. At the same time, your self-worth should not come from how much you do for others. Give importance to your thoughts and desires. You will be surprised at the respect you earn.
7. Indulging In Negative Self-Talk
Negative self-talk has to do with prejudice against yourself and low self-esteem. Research has shown that people who cultivate negative energy experience more stress and more sickness. Do not set impossible standards for yourself. Train your mind to dwell on the positives. Engage in constructive pep talk. Reaffirm to yourself every day, “I am unique, and I love myself”.
8. Clinging To The Past
How you handle that heartbreak is more important than the hurt itself. Letting go can be difficult. Make a conscious decision to let go. Confide in a friend and vent it all out. Your circumstances keep changing all the time. Do not ruminate on what cannot be changed.
9. Being Judgmental
While it’s human nature to be judgmental, try and remember that there is no one way of living. Do not worry about what others are doing or not doing. Restrain yourself from gossiping about others. It is not just time-consuming but also taxing and unnecessary. Studies claim that being non-judgmental can lead to lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress-related illnesses. Spend your time well.
10. Being Dishonest
Don’t kill that nagging little voice within you. Be your authentic self. Be open and truthful in everything you say, do, and feel. Your conscience will keep you out of trouble and ensure you have the courage to admit things as they are.
11. Being Lazy
Science is unanimous on this one. Exercising releases the good-mood endorphins. Physical activity is a sure-shot way to keep depression at bay. So sweat it out in the gym or just take a walk to the nearby supermarket. There is simply no way your workout will end with a bad mood.
12. Leading A Stressful Life
When you are stressed, your body secretes adrenaline and cortisone, which leads to higher blood pressure, increased sugar levels, and, in some cases, may cause major organ damage. Plug in soothing music, go for a long walk, meditate, or get a de-stressing massage. Positive thoughts are known to increase energy levels and productivity by as much as 30 percent.
13. Chasing Material Possessions
Life is too short and time goes by quick. So make the most of it. Your talents, personality, and persona make you special. Cherish that. Happiness and fulfillment come from intangibles like love, hope, peace, and relationships. You will not find them at a departmental store. So stop looking there. Stop chasing the mansion and focus on creating everlasting memories.
14. Taking Yourself Too Seriously
There will be tough days. All you can do is, try and look for the silver lining. Find humor in situations, and you will be able to navigate through life’s ups and downs easily. Self-deprecating humor is a powerful tool. Laugh at your mistakes with amusement and the world will laugh with you.
15. Surrounding Yourself With Negative People
You are the friendships you keep. Surround yourself with people who are loving, supportive, and interested in your betterment. Nurture your important relations and choose uplifting friendships
An amazing life awaits you! As Mae West said, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
