What Happens To Your Body When You Yell

‘I am losing it.’ ‘My blood boils at the sight of him.’ ‘This is getting on my nerves.’ ‘Don’t test my patience.’

How many times do you hear yourself saying these things when the angry young woman in you wants to jump out of that body and punch someone right in their face? In the everyday chaos, yelling at someone seems like a regular thing. But have you ever wondered what exactly happens to your body when you yell?

Well, here’s the answer. When we yell, the first signal goes to a part of the brain called the amygdala, a sensor that immediately picks up stress signals and prepares our body to fight as a knee-jerk reaction. Constant yelling may lead to malfunctioning of the amygdala so much that even small, harmless events could drive people to their wits’ end – something as lame as a mobile phone ringing or missing car keys.

As one yells, the amygdala contacts the locus coeruleus whose job is to activate the sympathetic nervous system and gather strengthening resources like sugars to prepare the body to react. The amygdala also signals the prefrontal cortex that is more rational and can differentiate a real threat from unreal. Techniques like meditation can strengthen the prefrontal cortex in the long run and reduce the stress. When they say count one to 10 before reacting, they are basically asking you to evoke the prefrontal cortex.

The anterior cingulate cortex is another part of the brain that gets activated in stress. However, its job is to magnify a particular situation, enabling one to concentrate more on it and giving everything else a back seat. This is the secret ingredient of the brain that enables army officials to maintain their calm at war or entrepreneurs to make strategic moves in a difficult market scenario. These people have strengthened their anterior cingulate cortex over time.

The hippocampus is like the director of the brain that decides on memory storage. An excessive amount of the stress hormone cortisol can confuse the hippocampus, leading to a short loss of memory. This is why you can’t find that very file on your laptop that you use frequently.

Apart from these scientific reasons, your body parts also give you some visible signals when you yell.

Apart from these scientific

1. Skin

When you yell, your skin may start looking pale or flushed with blood. That’s due to the redistribution of blood between your skin and muscles. So, if yelling becomes a habit, your skin could age faster due to perspiration, making you prone to rashes and acne.

2. Intestines

Haven’t you experienced indigestion, acidity, and similar gastrointestinal problems when you are burdened with deadlines? That’s because the body is using its energy to deal with stress instead of digesting food. If this is ignored, it might result in chronic constipation, indigestion, or diarrhea.

3. Weight Gain

We all love to indulge in comfort foods like chocolates, cakes, and ice creams to feel better after a stressful tiff. What many people don’t know is that this factor is temporary, and excessive cortisol leads to retention of fat around your tummy.

4. Muscles And Head

Tension gears up the muscles. Constant gearing up is not a natural body phenomenon and leads to muscle pain. The tensing of the neck muscles can lead to headaches.

5. Heart And Lungs

Yelling makes the heart pump more blood in the body. Over a period of time, this condition becomes permanent, resulting in high blood pressure and thickening of heart muscles, and leads to major heart diseases. Stressed lungs take shallow breaths instead of deeper ones, and increase the chances of inflammation and asthma.

And that’s not all. Yelling has its effect on important body functions like immunity, sleep, libido, fertility, hair, and the list goes on.

Those mood swings, constant losing of temper, and that never-ending restlessness are totally not worth it. So keep your calm, meditate, take deep breaths, or consult a physician at appropriate times. Nothing is more important than a calm mind and a happy heart.
