Is It Safe To Cook And Wrap Food With Aluminium Foil?

2:58 AM

Do you often wrap food with an aluminium foil? Then you must stop that right away. Nowadays, many people use an aluminium foil to wrap food as it is easy to find and dispose. But they are not aware of the harmful effects it might cause.

Wondering how something so common like an aluminium foil can pose a threat to your life? Then you must read this post.

Health Problems Caused By Aluminium Foil And Utensils:

As mentioned already, the use of aluminium foil and utensils can cause a wide range of health conditions. This is why you need to look for another way to heat and cook food. Some of the conditions caused by using foil and utensils made of this metal are as follows:

  • Kidney failure
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Osteoporosis
  • Asthma
  • Abdominal pain
  • Memory loss

How Aluminium Foil Affects Health:

Aluminium is a metal that is highly reactive. It reacts with the food that is processed in utensils made of this metal, or food that is wrapped in the foil. The metal leaches out and this can have very adverse effects on your health. More leaching occurs when you heat food wrapped in this type of foil too many times. You should also keep in mind that the metal is even more reactive when the food is acidic or spicy because it gets easily absorbed by these types of food.

Many people heat their food after wrapping it in aluminium foil. When the foil gets heated, the metal leaches out and gets absorbed by the food. For instance, if you cook meat on a grill after wrapping it in foil, the meat gets contaminated by the aluminium, making it highly dangerous. Keep in mind that it does not matter if you use the shiny or the dull side; the effects are the same. The amount of aluminium that is absorbed by the food depends on the duration for which it is heated and the temperature of the oven or grill.

When aluminium enters your body through food wrapped or cooked in aluminium foil, your digestive system would be unable to work on it, meaning that it does not get digested. This in turn gets accumulated in the different organs of your body like kidneys, bones, liver and brain tissues. It continues to collect in your system as your body would be unable to flush it out. And this can prove to be fatal.

Aluminium Foil And Alzheimer’s Disease:

When aluminium gets accumulated in the body, it affects the nervous system and causes conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety, memory loss, etc. There have been studies that show a significant amount of aluminium in the brain tissues of people who suffer from Alzheimer’s.

Aluminium Foil And Osteoporosis:

Research has shown that aluminium can get deposited on the bones when a foil made out of this metal is used to heat or cook food. High levels of the metal can lead to changes in bone mineralisation, bone cell activity, parathyroid and matrix formation. Chronic aluminium toxicity also significantly decreases osteoblast population and inhibits mineralisation of bones, which in turn results in osteoporosis.

Research On Aluminium And Its Effects On Health:

Although more studies have to be conducted, there is some evidence that cooking with aluminium has adverse effects on health. It has been found that one person can consume 139.2 milligrams of the metal depending on how the food is cooked. In one study, researchers tested 5 different meats (turkey, chicken, water buffalo, beef and mutton) that were packed and cooked in aluminium foil at various temperatures above 150 degrees Celsius. They found that the concentration of aluminium shot up by 378 percent in red meats and 215 percent in poultry.

It was also found that foods that are highly acidic contained two times the amount of the metal, and that the size of a cooking pan made out of aluminium played a role in the amount of the metal that leaked into the food. Research has shown that wrapping cold foods in aluminium foil is perfectly safe.

According to research, it is not safe to wrap and cook food with aluminium foil, particularly when the food is highly acidic. It has also been found that ingesting food that is baked with this type of foil could increase the risk of developing various life-threatening ailments.

Safeguard Your Brain And Bones:

As you now know, it is best to avoid using aluminium foil to wrap or cook food. Here are a few things that you should keep in mind:

  • Do not heat up, cook or put hot food on aluminium foil. Use it only to wrap cold sandwiches or store food in the refrigerator. Pans made out of tempered glass are a much safer alternative.
  • Do not store acidic foods in aluminium foil. This means that you should store citrus fruits, tomatoes, spices, etc.
  • Use wax paper instead of foil if you need to store food while it is still hot. You can also use food storage containers made of glass.
  • Invest in pots and pans made of stainless steel instead of aluminium.

Avoiding aluminium in your kitchen is easy! There are many better alternatives, allowing you to make sure that you prevent different diseases and ailments from affecting you and your family.

There is enough evidence suggesting that when you are exposed to high levels of aluminium, it can result in terminal diseases as well as a wide range of other health complications. If you often use this type of foil to store or cook food, it is time to start looking for a safer and healthier alternative. It could be a decision that protects you and your loved ones.
