How To Do Sugar Skull Makeup?
12:43 AMAnd, it’s baaack! With jack-o’-lanterns, cobwebs, strings of holiday lights and black spiders across the city, it’s pretty much clear that Halloween has crept up on us. And while some have been planning the look since last year, the others find themselves faced with an awful decision — what will our look be?
Of course, you got yourself a last minute costume – seriously, black witch and a playboy bunny outfit is too passé. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t workout with your look, is it? So for all the (lazy) Halloween enthusiasts looking for a last-minute Halloween makeup ideas – take inspiration from Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the dead) and re-create a sugar skull look. Trust us when we say, this all-out ghoul might have a touch of girliness, but you will certainly stir up a scream or two. So toss on the makeup like a skull for an unexpected Halloween look that’s also immediately recognizable.
Read ahead and get ready to be the center of attention…
1. Enhance Your Eyes:
Go all-out crazy with these easy, intricate and living skeleton eye makeup tricks.
- Begin by concealing your eyes with MAC’s faithful Pro Longwear Concealer.
- Next, map out your skull eye sockets by creating two large circles with a black liquid liner. Choose a flat brush and Snazaroo Black Face Paint Refill, and draw circles that go above your brows, around and under your eyes. Now fill in the circles. Don’t worry if the sockets are a bit shadowy, it is absolutely fine.
- After you fill in the circles, take a brush and paint a blue color (try Snazaroo Classic Makeup Face & Body Paint – Sky Blue) or even an eyeshadow (like MAC Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Styledriven) just over the black circles. This will add depth, color, and would be a little less ghoul.
- Now, create a flower along the edges of the blue paint. For this, take a flat brush, dip it in the black face paint and draw petals all the way around each eye in whatever size you want.
- Finish it off by tracing a symmetrical line on the top of your forehead.
2. Like A Ghoul:
This is that one time when you can go completely wild with your beauty imagination – without too many raising eyebrows. So, to achieve this easy Halloween staple read the step-by-step tutorial below.
- Begin with removing every speck of makeup, dirt and oil with a mild cleanser. We suggest CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, as this budget-friendly cleanser is light, smooth and keeps your skin hydrated.
- Once done with cleansing, exfoliate with Clinique 7-Day Scrub Cream. Follow this by moisturizing your skin. We prefer Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer.
Tip: Make sure you wait for about a minute until the moisturizer is absorbed. Otherwise, it can cause the makeup to thin out. - Prime your face with Laura Geller Spackle Under Makeup Primer for a smooth base and blemish-blurring effects.
- Now to erase any similarity of an actual human complexion, take a fluffy brush and buff a white base all over your face (that includes your lips) and neck evenly. We prefer Make Up For Ever’s Flash Color #10 White. This thick, creamy and moisturizing color will flawlessly cover the skin.
- To create a ghoulish look, take the same black face paint and mark a spot on the tip of your nose and chin. Then trace out the upside-down heart-shape and fill in with the paint.
- Next create a dimension. Pick a liquid blush in a dark shade and apply it underneath the cheekbones, more like a color sitting on top. We suggest Nyx Rouge Cream Blush In Red Cheeks.
3. Lips:
No classic costume would be complete without those famous stitched lips, and remember that the look can either make or break your makeup. So we figure out how to get those statement lips for you.
- Pucker your lips and press Make Up For Ever’s Flash Color #10 White onto the lips to drain the color from the face.
- To create the stitch effect, use a black liquid liner like Maybelline New York Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner and draw a diagonal line. Start from the sides of your mouth and then directly over your lips. Don’t be nervous if the lines aren’t perfect, they don’t have to.
- You can set the skin with lots of translucent powder. We recommend MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.
- Ta-da! Place two big flowers on your ears, and you’re good to go for a glam, spooky night out, skeleton style!
