Wisdom Teeth – An Overview:
Wisdom teeth are actually the last set of teeth that grow in your gums. This growth happens in adolescence (1), typically after 17 years of age. The problem occurs because when these teeth grow, there is not much space left in the gum – which is quite natural. In such situations, the emergence of wisdom teeth can lead to pain and severe discomfort. Wisdom teeth can develop quite suddenly in most instances.
Problems Caused By Wisdom Teeth:
Apart from the pain, there are some other complications and inconveniences that wisdom teeth can cause. These are not very serious, but are annoying to say the least. These are:
- Development of cyst leading to damage to teeth roots and gums
- Swelling in the gums
- Bad breath
- Difficulty in biting and eating foods
- Headaches
When you are suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, getting it extracted by a dentist seems the best option. Before or after the tooth extraction, you will have to cope up with some pain. While the dentist will offer you medication to reduce the pain (2), you may also resort to a few home remedies to reduce the inflammation and pain. One such remedy is pineapple juice. It has been used by so many people to cope with wisdom tooth pain.
Why Use Pineapple Juice To Reduce The Effects Of Wisdom Teeth:
There are so many home remedies people resort to for reducing the inflammation and pain caused by wisdom teeth, and pineapple juice is one of them (3). This is owing to the presence of an enzyme called bromelain and vitamin C (4). Consuming vitamin C rich foods helps in speeding up the healing process post tooth extraction (5).
You can take pineapple juice both before and after (with a gap of one day) the extraction of wisdom teeth to keep the swelling of gums in check. Pineapple juice is also recommended for use in treating other ailments related to inflammation.
Points To Keep In Mind:
Trying out pineapple juice to lessen the pain and swelling of wisdom teeth is fine, but you need to keep certain points in mind to get better results in this regard.
- For the desired results, you may drink homemade pineapple juice after or before wisdom tooth extraction. Ensure the juice is made with ripe and fresh pineapples. Avoid drinking OTC pineapple juices as they are not likely to contain the nutrients in the desired amounts.
- Do not drink the juice chilled as it can cause pain in the gums. Besides, it is rather acidic in nature. So, refrain from drinking the juice on the first day after tooth extraction. It is prudent that you drink the juice in small amounts.
- You can also try out some other herbal extracts used as a home remedy for dental pain and pain due to wisdom teeth, and to get relief from the pain and swelling in the gums (6). Some such examples are clove oil, mint and guava leaves, etc.
- Drinking pineapple juice is not likely to cause any dental issue or complication. However, it is advisable that you talk with your dentist to get a clinical view on this.
- Naturally, for the first two days or so after the tooth extraction, you will mostly be on a liquid diet. Ensure that you begin the transition from liquid to semi-solid and chewable foods rather slowly.
Natural remedies help aid and quicken the process of healing. While you may still have to extract the tooth, drinking pineapple juice can considerably bring down the pain levels if you have a wisdom tooth erupting!
