Sonoma Diet – An Overview:

The diet’s name comes from California’s wine country and is influenced by the Mediterranean way of eating that is primarily focused on plants (1). According to Connie Gutterson, PhD, RD, who is the creator of the Sonoma Diet, apart from helping you to lose weight, the diet will help you break your addiction to sugar and teach you a new way to satisfy your cravings by eating only the healthiest of foods.

Foods That You Can Eat:

The Sonoma Diet is designed to be simple and full of flavour (2). It is not about avoiding food, but enjoying it. It is based on the principle that eating the right amount of the right foods is the secret to losing weight healthily. With the Mediterranean diet, you get a cornucopia of “power foods” that are full of nutrients, low on calories and taste delicious. What makes them even better is that they have been proven to be highly effective in protecting you against serious illnesses such as heart disease.

There are plenty of flavourful foods that you will eat while you are on the Sonoma Diet. They will be your closest allies as you start your weight loss journey. The super foods that you will be eating with this great diet include the following:

  • Almonds
  • Olive oil
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Beans
  • Citrus fruits
  • Grapes
  • Tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Whole grains

The Three Waves Of The Sonoma Diet:

A new concept is introduced by the Sonoma Diet and it is known as the ‘Plate and Bowl’. A specific plate size is assigned to each meal, and it comes with instructions on how you should fill your plate at every meal. This diet is divided into three phases or “waves” which are as follows:

Wave 1:

This phase is designed to hasten the weight loss process and lasts for 10 days (3). During this wave, you are required to eliminate all processed foods and certain fatty foods like butter, chips and bacon from your diet. Other foods that are banned while you are on Wave One of the diet include those that contain natural sugars like juice, fruit, wine and some vegetables. You are allowed to eat eggs, lean beef, olive oil, spices, walnut, soba noodles and asparagus.

Wave 2:

In the second wave of the Sonoma Diet, the same foods in Wave 1 are included. However, you can add more vegetables, certain fruits and treats that are sugar-free. You can also drink up to 6 ounces of wine every day. You will need to stay in this wave until you have achieved your goal weight. This is the primary phase for weight loss.

Wave 3:

Once you have reached your goal weight, this is the maintenance phase that you will need to stick with throughout your life. This means that the Sonoma Diet becomes a part of your lifestyle. The diet’s creator encourages followers of this diet to experiment with different types of fruits to maintain their new weight and get the nutrition their body needs and include regular exercise to have fun and stay fit. You can also indulge in a full—fat treat on rare occasions. You need to keep in mind that it is important to limit your intake of hydrogenated fats and packaged foods.

The initial phase of the Sonoma Diet is tough as it requires you to banish foods that your body has become accustomed to. However, it gets easier in the second and third waves as you go from dieting to making changes to your lifestyle.

Does It Work For Everyone?

There are not many dietary preferences or restrictions with the Sonoma Diet. It works well for almost everyone.

Vegan Or Vegetarian:

If you love vegetables, fruits and healthy foods in general, this diet is perfect for you and it will be very effective in helping you lose the weight you want to. Sources of protein that are meat-free are permitted. You just need to remember that they should be free of added carbs and low in saturated fat.

Diet Low In Fat:

The Sonoma Diet is a great option for people who are on a diet that is low in fat. During Wave 1, hydrogenated fats are eliminated from your diet, and this is obviously perfect for low-fat diets. Apart from these fats, carbs and sugars are limited in all the waves of the diet.

Gluten-Free Diet:

Although the Sonoma Diet does not cater to those with gluten sensitivities. However, it can work for people on this diet as a lot of emphasis is put on natural foods like fruits and vegetables. For whole-grain foods and other products, make sure that you read the labels so that you can be certain that they are gluten-free.

The Sonoma Diet is a way of embracing a whole new way of eating. It is not about avoiding foods. In fact, it encourages you to enjoy the foods that you eat. All you need to do is remember to pick only foods that are nutritious and healthy. This diet encourages you to have healthier eating habits, make more mindful and better food choices and have a better appreciation for the best nutrition that is available. The Sonoma Diet is all about eating the right foods, enjoying them and living a lifestyle that keeps you slim and healthy.

With the Sonoma Diet, you have access to foods that are both nutritious and delicious. Unlike other diets, you do not have to starve yourself or force yourself to eat foods that you hate. There are plenty of amazing recipes that you can use to make scrumptious meals with the foods that are allowed in the diet. The success of the Sonoma Diet is centered on the rewards that you get from eating nutrient-dense and tasty foods, and a slimmer waist is just one of them!
