This post talks about warts and other important points you should be knowing. Want to know more? Read on.

Warts – An Overview:

Warts are the unwanted eruptions caused due to the HPV virus (Human Papillomavirus) (1). They can occur anywhere on the body and can infect anyone in close contact. Warts look like small growths on the skin’s surface. When located on the genitals or the internal parts of the cervix, they can cause a lot of discomfort and even increase the risk of cancer.

The recent research suggests that more than 20 million people in the United States carry some form of HPV that may cause warts to a person’s feet, hands or genitals (2). Although they normally do not cause pain, they are embarrassing and unsightly. In some cases, they hurt and cause itchiness.

Types Of Warts:

  • The common type of warts mostly appears on the hands, but can also appear on any other area.
  • The flat warts are generally found on the back of the hands and the face. These are smoother and smaller than the other type of warts.
  • The genital warts are located on the external genitalia, in the area between the thighs, in the pubic area. They can even appear inside the anal canal and vagina.
  • The plantar warts are located on the soles of the feet.

Symptoms And Signs Of Warts:

  1. The common warts start as a tiny, flesh- colored, smooth eruption and slowly grow into a rough growth, around ¼ inches in size.
  2. The flat warts are small, pink or flesh- colored growths with flat tops.
  3. Genital warts are small eruptions that look similar to common warts.
  4. The plantar warts are flattened, rough or tender, resembling callus like growths with tiny black dots in the center. Sometimes these warts can cause disruption in posture causing back or leg pain.

Treatment Options For Warts:

Most of the time, no treatment is required to treat warts because they disappear on their own over a period without any intervention. According to studies, one-half of cutaneous warts go off spontaneously within one year, and two-thirds disappear in two years. Research says that around 70% warts clear off within three months without any treatment.

Treatment is required only for warts that cause pain or are unsightly. These include drug therapy, cryosurgery using liquid nitrogen for destroying tissue, lasers, electrosurgery (burning), and cutting them out.

Other treatment options include bleomycin, interferon, immunotherapy and more. However, all these treatments can cause scarring and hence you should best avoid them unless extremely necessary.

So, is there any other option that can help you get rid of warts naturally? Surely there is!

The tea tree oil has been used for clearing warts since decades. From grandmothers to traditional medical practitioners, it has been recommended by everyone as an effective remedy to treat warts.

Properties Of Tea Tree Oil:

Also known as the Melaleuca tree in Australia, the tea tree oil is known for its natural antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. It helps the body to battle the virus causing warts (3). The tree has small evergreen leaves. The oil is extremely popular for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It is used in the manufacturing of cosmetic products, different kinds of creams, gels, lotions, shampoos, deodorants, liquid soaps and toothpaste.

Tea tree oil is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as a natural component in many medicines. It is especially used in medicines related to skin problems. The oil is highly recommended as a skin care agent. It is used to stop infections, fungal and bacterial development, and to provide relief from redness and inflammation.

Tea Tree Oil For Moles And Warts:

Tea tree oil is used as one of the popular remedies for removing warts and moles. The oil is rich in antiviral properties, and hence, safely and naturally contributes to the removal of these unwanted growths. The tea tree oil is not only cheap, but is highly effective and does not cause scarring.

Choosing The Best Oil For The Treatment:

For the tea tree oil to be effective, you must check the oil before buying. Many cosmetic companies sell the tea tree oil in combination with 90% soybean oil. With only 10% tea tree oil content, the effectiveness of the mixture is doubtful and hence you must always select the oil with 100% tea tree oil. However, avoid using the pure essential tea tree oil directly on warts as it may cause irritation.

Removing Warts On Hands And Feet:

Warts located on the feet or hands can be treated by applying tea tree oil twice or even thrice a day. If you are applying it on the feet, avoid diluting it because the skin of the feet is thicker. However, if you have to apply on sensitive areas, you must dilute it with herbal decoctions such as Aloe Vera gel, or juice or water. The dilution should be carried out in the ratio of fifty- fifty.

Removing Warts On Other Body Parts:

Avoid applying pure tea tree oil on the other body parts or it may cause itchiness, redness, and irritation. You can use the 50% dilution formula or alter it a bit, depending upon the reaction of your skin to the concentration. However, the more concentrated the solution, the more effective is the treatment. Hence, try to adjust to a dose that contains maximum benefits of tea tree oil, albeit do not cause any reaction to your skin.

Removing Genital Warts:

When using tea tree oil for removing genital warts (4), ensure that there is no skin irritation or wound. Use your own dilution of tea tree oil and apply with a cotton swab or gauze bandage for treating warts. Dab the excess moisture with the cotton ball and leave the bandage overnight. Application of the tea tree oil overnight helps in better and undisturbed penetration of the oil and results in faster removal of warts.
