Do you have regular monthly breakouts due to hormone changes? If so, then you must be having a combination of both oily and dry skin. Sometimes, the breakout can also occur as you advance menopause, and when your body is going through a lot of hormonal upheaval.

In such cases, you cannot rely on the chemical face washes and facial soaps in the market that usually strip all the oil from your face. So, what can be the best alternative? It is activated charcoal soap.

Wondering how it helps and how to prepare it at home? This post can help you out. Read on!

How Does Activated Charcoal Soap Help?

The homemade charcoal soap draws the impurities within the skin gently, without disturbing its moisture levels. Its anti-bacterial properties restrict the formation of acne and keep your skin clear even during hormonal changes. Apart from charcoal, other ingredients are also included in this soap to enhance the benefits.

  • The Spirulina Powder (green/blue algae) is enriched with lots of vitamins and minerals and nourishes the skin.
  • The tea-tree essential oil is known for its anti-bacterial properties that prevent acne.
  • Lavender essential oil soothes the skin.
  • Natural Red Moroccan Clay draws toxins and impurities and moisturizes the skin.
  • Rosehips powder acts as a natural anti-oxidant and anti-aging agent.
  • Chamomile powder soothes the skin.
  • Coconut oil serves as a cleanser.
  • The combination of jojoba, grape seed, Shea butter, evening primrose and olive oil condition the skin.

Ingredients:

  • 14.4 oz. Pomace olive oil
  • 7.2 oz. 76-degree melting point coconut oil
  • 7.2 oz. Rice bran oil
  • 1.9 oz. jojoba oil
  • 3.6 oz. Grape-seed oil
  • 1.4 oz. Evening primrose oil
  • 0.3 oz. Olive Squalane Oil
  • 1.2 oz. Shea butter
  • 1 tbsp. candelilla wax
  • 12 oz. Distilled water
  • 4.6 oz. Sodium hydroxide/lye

Trace Elements:

  • 1 tbsp. spirulina powder
  • 1 tbsp. Activated charcoal powder
  • 1 tbsp. Chamomile flower powder
  • 1 tbsp. Rose hips powder
  • 1 tbsp. Red Moroccan clay powder
  • 1 oz. Lavender essential oil
  • 0.15 oz. Tea tree oil

Method:

All these ingredients together will make around 10 to 12 soap bars of 4 to 5 oz each.

Step 1:

  1. Place the distilled water in a pitcher.
  2. Stir the mentioned quantity of lye into the distilled water until the lye dissolves completely.
  3. Keep this mixture aside and let it cool.

Step 2:

  1. Take a large non-aluminium pot and combine wax, Shea butter and soap making oil in it.
  2. Place this pot on the flame of medium heat and let the ingredients melt.
  3. Remove from the stove once all the ingredients have melted and set aside for cooling.

Step 3:

  1. While both these mixtures are cooling, you can start lining the mould.
  2. Measure the algae, activated charcoal, chamomile powder, rosehips powder and mix them all into a small container.
  3. Keep this aside.
  4. In a container, mix all the essential oils and keep aside.

Step 4:

  1. Once all the ingredients reach the temperature between 110 to 115 degrees F, you can start making the soap.
  2. You can mix it even at a higher temperature by adding a bit of more wax.
  3. Add the dry agents to the soap in small quantities and ensure that all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated by stirring with an immersion or stick blender prior to adding the lye water.

Step 5:

  1. Finally, pour the lye water into the soap making oils and stir with the stick or immersion blender.
  2. At this point, you can add any dry ingredient or essential oil, which had not been added previously.
  3. Pour this mixture into the soap mould, cover, and insulate it for at least 24 hours.
  4. Once the insulation period is over, unmold the soaps and cut them into bars.
  5. Let the bars set and cool in a dry location for around 3 to 6 weeks before you start using them.

An activated charcoal soap thus prepared is good for the skin and controls the spread and outburst of acne and other bacterial skin infections.
